For this analysis, we surveyed 8,638 adults from May 13-19, 2024. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/05\/PP_2024.5.23_economy-national-problems_TOPLINE.pdf\">questions used for this report<\/a>, along with responses, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2024\/05\/23\/economy-national-problems-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inflation may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/us-consumer-prices-rise-less-than-expected-april-core-cpi-slows-2024-05-15\/\">be cooling<\/a>, but it continues to loom large over Americans\u2019 evaluations of the country and the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=168745\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f2f1f1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f2f1f1;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/05\/PP_2024.5.23_economy_00-01.png?resize=480,621 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/05\/PP_2024.5.23_economy_00-01.png?resize=620,802 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"401\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/05\/PP_2024.5.23_economy_00-01.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Americans\u2019 ratings of national economic conditions have slipped since January\" class=\"wp-image-168745 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, 23% of U.S. adults say the economy is in excellent or good shape, down from 28% in January but higher than the 19% who rated the economy positively last April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The recent negative slide in economic ratings has mainly taken place among Democrats and those who lean to the Democratic Party: 37% rate the economy positively today, down from 44% in January (but up from 28% last spring).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Republicans and Republican leaners\u2019 views are little changed over this period \u2013 only one-in-ten rate the economy positively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public again sees inflation as one of the top problems facing the nation, with 62% saying inflation is a very big problem for the country \u2013 only slightly down from the 65% who said this last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But another economic concern \u2013 unemployment \u2013 is <em>not<\/em> widely viewed as a very big problem for the country. Each of these is seen as a very big problem by roughly half of the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThe ability of Republicans and Democrats to work together\u201d also continues to rate as a top problem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Of the 16 concerns included in the survey, it\u2019s the only one that majorities in both partisan coalitions (57% of Republicans and 63% of Democrats) say is a very big problem for the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, the Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults, conducted May 13-19 among 8,638 members of the Center\u2019s nationally representative American Trends Panel, finds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Republicans and GOP leaners are far more likely than Democrats and Democratic leaners to see illegal immigration, the federal budget deficit and inflation as major problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Democrats are considerably more likely than Republicans to view climate change, gun violence and racism as major national problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;americans-views-of-the-state-of-the-nation&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"americans-views-of-the-state-of-the-nation\">Americans\u2019 views of the state of the nation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans continue to be more likely to feel fearful and angry about the state of the nation than to feel hopeful or proud \u2013 and this has largely been the case since Pew Research Center first asked these questions in June 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=168747\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eeeded\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eeeded;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/05\/PP_2024.5.23_economy_00-03.png?resize=480,497 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/05\/PP_2024.5.23_economy_00-03.png?resize=620,642 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"321\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/05\/PP_2024.5.23_economy_00-03.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Democrats more likely to be \u2018hopeful\u2019 about state of country; Republicans more likely to be \u2018fearful\u2019 and \u2018angry\u2019\" class=\"wp-image-168747 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election, Democrats have been considerably more likely than Republicans to express positive emotions about the state of the country (and less likely to express negative emotions). <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2022\/06\/06\/views-about-the-state-of-the-nation\/\">This is a reversal of the partisan patterns<\/a> on these questions during the Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, majorities in both parties \u2013 64% of Republicans and 56% of Democrats \u2013 say they are fearful about the state of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public also continues to express much more dissatisfaction than satisfaction with the state of the nation \u2013 a trend that dates back decades.
