We previously used the term \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2024\/06\/15\/black-americans-and-u-s-institutions-methodology\/#note\">racial conspiracy theories<\/a>\u201d as an editorial shorthand to describe a complex and mixed set of findings.\u00a0By using these words, our reporting distorted rather than clarified the point of the study.\u00a0Changes to this version include: an updated headline, new &#8220;explainer&#8221; paragraphs, some additional context and direct quotes from focus group participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1.4\">Claudia Deane, Mark Hugo Lopez and Neha Sahgal contributed to the revision of this report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a>Although the <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tuskegee\/about.html\">Tuskegee Syphilis Study<\/a> is one of the best-known examples of race-based medical malpractice, there are others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the 20th century, many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississippifreepress.org\/12782\/the-troubling-past-of-forced-sterilization-of-black-women-and-girls-in-mississippi-and-the-south\">Black women were subject to eugenics laws that forcibly sterilized them<\/a>. In 1951, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9374392\/\">Henrietta Lacks\u2019 cervical cells<\/a> were harvested and studied without her knowledge or consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2021\/05\/28\/996603360\/trying-to-avoid-racist-health-care-black-women-seek-out-black-obstetricians\">Black women<\/a> specifically seek out Black obstetricians to avoid racial discrimination in medical care and improve their health outcomes. While nearly half (47%) said health outcomes for Black people have improved over the last 20 years, sizable minorities said they have stayed the same (31%) or gotten worse (20%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2022\/04\/07\/black-americans-views-of-and-engagement-with-science\/#:~:text=Still%2C%2055%25%20of%20Black%20adults%20say%20they%E2%80%99ve%20had%20at%20least%20one%20of%20several%20negative%20experiences%20with%20health%20care%20providers%20in%20the%20past%2C%20such%20as%20feeling%20they%20had%20to%20speak%20up%20to%20get%20the%20proper%20care%20or%20that%20the%20pain%20they%20were%20experiencing%20was%20not%20being%20taken%20seriously.\">the majority of Black Americans (55%) said they have had negative experiences with doctors<\/a>, including having to speak up to get proper care and feeling like the pain they were experiencing was not taken seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the current survey, 51% of Black Americans say the U.S. health care system was designed to hold Black people back a great deal or fair amount. Another 28% say it was designed to hold Black people back some, and 19% say not too much or not at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black adults differ significantly on this question by gender. Indeed, Black women (58%) are more likely than Black men (44%) to say the health care system was designed to hold Black people back. But Black women under 50 (61%) are much more likely to say this than older Black women (54%) and all men regardless of age (44%). <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2022\/04\/07\/black-americans-views-about-health-disparities-experiences-with-health-care\/#CHAPTER-h-a-majority-of-black-americans-give-positive-ratings-of-their-recent-health-care-but-can-also-point-to-negative-experiences-in-the-past:~:text=Black%20women%2C%20especially,62%25%20vs.%2046%25).\">These patterns are like those in the 2022 study<\/a>, which found that Black women (particularly those under 50) were significantly more likely than Black men to report negative experiences in health care. Fewer say this is a thing of the past (30%) or that it never happened (10%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like their general belief that the U.S. health care system was designed to hold Black people back, Black women (57%) are slightly more likely than Black men (52%) to believe medical experimentation on Black people without their knowledge or consent is something that is happening today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black adults with some college (58%) or a high school diploma (55%) are more likely than those with a bachelor\u2019s degree or higher (49%) to say medical experimentation on Black people without their knowledge or consent happens today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise, Black adults with lower incomes (60%) are the most likely among the income groups to agree. Black adults who live in the Midwest (60%) are more likely than those in the Northeast (52%) to say medical experimentation against Black people happens today. About half of Black adults in the South (54%) and the West (53%) say the same.
