Americans\u2019 experiences with social media news influencers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>For our latest survey data about news influencers,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/news-influencers-fact-sheet\/\">read the \u201cNews Influencers Fact Sheet.\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the wider political and media world has taken notice of news influencers, Americans have begun to incorporate these individuals\u2019 posts into their news habits: About one-in-five (21%) say they regularly get news from news influencers on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=191641\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ebe8e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ebe8e3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PJ_2024.11.18_news-influencers_01-01.png?resize=480,381 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PJ_2024.11.18_news-influencers_01-01.png?resize=620,492 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"246\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PJ_2024.11.18_news-influencers_01-01.png?w=620\" alt=\"Bar chart showing about 1 in 5 Americans regularly get news from news influencers\" class=\"wp-image-191641 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This data comes from a survey of more than 10,000 U.S. adults conducted in late July and early August 2024.<strong> The term \u201cnews influencers\u201d was defined for survey respondents as \u201cindividuals who have a large following on social media and often post about news or political or social issues.\u201d <\/strong>This is similar to how we define this group in our <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/11\/18\/how-we-created-a-list-of-popular-news-influencers-and-where-they-post\/\">analysis of a sample of 500 news influencers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This chapter dives into the attitudes and experiences of Americans who regularly get news from news influencers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=191642\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e9e4e5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e9e4e5;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PJ_2024.11.18_news-influencers_01-02.png?resize=480,1071 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PJ_2024.11.18_news-influencers_01-02.png?resize=620,1384 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"692\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PJ_2024.11.18_news-influencers_01-02.png?w=459\" alt=\"Bar chart showing almost 4 in 10 U.S. adults under 30 get news from news influencers\" class=\"wp-image-191642 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar to other patterns of <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2024\/01\/31\/americans-social-media-use\/#stark-age-differences-in-who-uses-each-app-or-site\">social media use<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/social-media-and-news-fact-sheet\/#who-consumes-news-on-each-social-media-site\">news consumption on social media<\/a>, younger adults are much more likely to get news from news influencers on social media. Nearly four-in-ten Americans ages 18 to 29 (37%) say they regularly get news from news influencers, compared with just 7% of those 65 and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Virtually identical shares of Republicans (21%) and Democrats (22%), including independents who lean toward each party, say they regularly get news from news influencers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White Americans are less likely than other racial or ethnic groups to get news from news influencers. Only 17% of White U.S. adults say they do this, versus higher shares among Hispanic (30%), Asian (29%) and Black adults (27%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, adults with lower incomes are more likely to get news from news influencers. About a quarter of those with lower incomes (26%) do this, compared with 21% of those in the middle-income category and 16% of those with higher incomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;what-types-of-information-do-americans-get-from-news-influencers&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-types-of-information-do-americans-get-from-news-influencers\">What types of information do Americans get from news influencers?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is common for Americans who regularly get news from news influencers to see several types of information from these creators. Three-in-ten say they mostly see opinions they agree with from news influencers, while just 2% say they mostly disagree with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, a 2023 Pew Research Center study of <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2023\/04\/18\/americans-experience-with-news-on-podcasts\/\">news and information on podcasts<\/a> found that podcast listeners who hear political opinions are much more likely to say those opinions line up with their own opinions than that they are different (47% vs. 7%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"most-americans-who-get-news-from-news-influencers-see-the-content-as-helpful-unique\">Most Americans who get news from news influencers see the content as helpful, unique<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults who regularly get news from news influencers generally say content from news influencers has helped them better understand current events and civic issues and that it is at least somewhat different from the news they get from other sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=191644\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e4dfdb\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e4dfdb;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PJ_2024.11.18_news-influencers_01-04.png?resize=480,569 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PJ_2024.11.18_news-influencers_01-04.png?resize=782,927 782w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PJ_2024.11.18_news-influencers_01-04.png?resize=840,996 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"498\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PJ_2024.11.18_news-influencers_01-04.png?w=840\" alt=\"Bar chart showing majorities of Americans who get news from news influencers say the information they share is helpful and say the news from news influencers is at least somewhat different from news from other sources\" class=\"wp-image-191644 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those who get news from news influencers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>65% say news influencers on social media have <strong>helped them better understand current events and civic issues,<\/strong> while just 9% say they have made them more confused. About a quarter (26%) say they have not made much of a difference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seven-in-ten say the <strong>news they get from news influencers is at least somewhat different from the news they get from other sources,<\/strong> including roughly a quarter who say it is extremely or very different (23%). About three-in-ten (29%) say news from news influencers is not too or not at all different from news from other sources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;americans-connections-with-news-influencers&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"americans-connections-with-news-influencers\">Americans\u2019 connections with news influencers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among U.S. adults who regularly get news from news influencers, 58% say they follow or subscribe to at least one news influencer on social media. Among those who regularly get news from influencers, Republicans who identify as conservative are more inclined than those who say they are moderate or liberal to say news influencers have helped them better understand current events and civic issues (67% vs. 55%). Among those who regularly get news from news influencers and say opinions are one thing they see, identical shares of conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats (42% each) say they mostly see opinions they agree with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, much smaller shares of conservative or moderate Democrats (20%) and moderate or liberal Republicans (13%) say this is the case. Instead, these groups are more likely to say they agree and disagree about equally with the opinions they see from news influencers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 data-is-section=\"true\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;id&quot;:&quot;young-adults-more-likely-to-see-content-from-news-influencers-as-helpful-unique&quot;}\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/table-of-contents&quot;}\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"young-adults-more-likely-to-see-content-from-news-influencers-as-helpful-unique\">Young adults more likely to see content from news influencers as helpful, unique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young adults are much more likely than those in older age groups to get news from news influencers.
