Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Surveys were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other factors. And Americans give Trump low marks for his efforts to date to reach out to those who supported Kamala Harris in the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly half of Americans (52%) say it is extremely or very important for Trump to reach out to Harris\u2019 supporters to try to unify the country. Another 30% say this is somewhat important. Somewhat more (48%) give Trump a \u201ccold\u201d rating (below 50), including 40% who rate him \u201cvery cold\u201d (between 0 and 24).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the share of Americans rating Trump warmly today (43%) is higher than it was after the 2020 (34%) or the 2016 (36%) elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fewer than four-in-ten describe Trump as even-tempered and a good role model. <\/strong>In evaluating Trump\u2019s personal traits and characteristics, a 55% majority say the phrase \u201cmentally sharp\u201d describes Trump very or fairly well, while nearly as many (51%) say he keeps his promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fewer than half describe the president-elect as caring about the needs of ordinary Americans (45%) or honest (42%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/09\/09\/harris-and-trumps-personal-traits-and-the-tone-of-their-campaigns\/\">And as was the case during the presidential campaign<\/a>, Trump draws relatively low ratings for being even-tempered (37%) and a good role model (34%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-americans-feel-about-the-country-after-the-election\">How Americans feel about the country after the election<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The share of Americans who are satisfied with the way things are going in the country has increased since October, from 23% to 29%. As has been the case for the past several years, a large majority (70%) remains dissatisfied with national conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jump to <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/11\/22\/americans-feelings-about-the-state-of-the-nation-reactions-to-the-2024-election\/\"><em>Chapter 3<\/em><\/a><em> for more on Americans\u2019 feelings about the state of the nation<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans and Democrats have traded places in their views of the country since Trump\u2019s victory:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>35% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents express positive views of national conditions, up from just 10% last month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About a quarter of Democrats and Democratic leaners (24%) have positive views, compared with 38% in October.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=192982\"><img data-dominant-color=\"efeeee\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #efeeee;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_00-04.png?resize=480,491 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_00-04.png?resize=620,634 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"317\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_00-04.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Most Democrats feel \u2018fearful\u2019 about the state of the country, while most Republicans feel \u2018hopeful\u2019\" class=\"wp-image-192982 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fear and anger are dominant emotions among Democrats.<\/strong> Nearly three-quarters of Democrats (73%) say they are \u201cfearful\u201d about the state of the country, while 54% say they feel \u201cangry.\u201d Just 29% of Democrats feel \u201chopeful\u201d and even fewer (14%) feel \u201cproud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Republicans are more hopeful, less fearful.<\/strong> Most Republicans (76%) say they feel hopeful about the state of the country, while nearly half (46%) say they are proud. Republicans (79%) are more likely than Democrats (64%) to say the transition will go well. At a similar point four years ago, when Trump was contesting the election results, just 26% expected the transition to go smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Trump\u2019s post-election conduct viewed much more positively than four years ago.<\/strong> Shortly after the 2020 election, only about a quarter of Americans (28%) viewed Trump\u2019s post-election conduct as excellent or good. Today, nearly twice as many (53%) view his conduct positively. A comparable share (56%) rate Harris\u2019 post-election conduct as excellent or good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reactions to Trump\u2019s victory.<\/strong> Republicans are reacting to the election results with a mixture of relief (46% say they are relieved by Trump\u2019s victory) and excitement (43%). A majority of Democrats (56%) express disappointment at the outcome, while 31% say they are angry.
