Americans\u2019 feelings about the state of the nation, reactions to the 2024 election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As has been the case for <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2017\/08\/04\/partisan-shifts-in-views-of-the-nation-but-overall-opinions-remain-negative\/\">nearly two decades<\/a>, a majority of Americans are expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=192996\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f3f2f2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f3f2f2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_3-01.png?resize=480,415 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_3-01.png?resize=782,676 782w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_3-01.png?resize=840,726 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"363\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_3-01.png?w=420\" alt=\"Chart shows Modest uptick in public satisfaction with the state of the country, driven by Republicans\" class=\"wp-image-192996 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, 29% of Americans say they are satisfied with the way things are going in the country, while 70% of Americans say they are dissatisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While overall public satisfaction has risen since before the election, this increase is entirely driven by Republicans and Republican-leaning independents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Just 10% of Republicans said they were satisfied with the state of the nation in early October, but 35% of Republicans say this today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While ratings have spiked among Republicans, Donald Trump\u2019s win has had the opposite effect on Democrats:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In October, 38% of Democrats and Democratic leaners expressed satisfaction with the way things are going in the country, compared with about a quarter (24%) who say this today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Partisans\u2019 national satisfaction ratings <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2017\/08\/04\/partisan-shifts-in-views-of-the-nation-but-overall-opinions-remain-negative\/\">typically shift with change in control of the White House<\/a>. For example, Democrats\u2019 views improved markedly after the election and inauguration of President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"feelings-about-the-country-fear-hope-anger-pride\">Feelings about the country: Fear, hope, anger, pride<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the most part, Americans\u2019 feelings about the state of the country are not dramatically different from their feelings after the 2020 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=192997\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ebe8e9\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ebe8e9;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_3-02.png?resize=480,491 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_3-02.png?resize=782,801 782w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_3-02.png?resize=842,862 842w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"430\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/PP_2024.11.22_post-election_3-02.png?w=420\" alt=\"Chart shows Republicans are now more hopeful about the country than after 2020 election; Democrats far less hopeful\" class=\"wp-image-192997 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet partisans\u2019 views are very different: Republicans are now far more likely to be hopeful and proud, while the share of Democrats who feel hopeful has declined sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Biden won the 2020 presidential election, Democrats (67%) were considerably more likely than Republicans (41%) to say they felt hopeful about the state of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Trump\u2019s win, partisans\u2019 feelings have reversed: Now, 76% of Republicans say they are hopeful, while 29% of Democrats say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The share of Republicans who say they feel proud of the country also has risen sharply, from 25% after the previous election to 46% today. Democrats\u2019 views have shown less change; 14% feel proud about the country, compared with 23% four years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans also are far less likely to feel fearful and angry about the country than they did after Biden\u2019s win. Roughly a third say they feel fearful, nearly 30 percentage points lower than four years ago. The decline in the share saying they feel angry has been about as large, from 56% then to 29% today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats are somewhat <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2020\/11\/20\/most-voters-are-fearful-and-angry-about-the-state-of-the-u-s-but-a-majority-now-are-hopeful-too\/\">more likely to say they feel fearful than in November 2020<\/a>, when Trump was disputing the results of the 2020 election. Nearly three-quarters of Democrats (73%) feel fearful, compared with six-in-ten in 2020. Half of all adults say they are excited (22%) or relieved (28%) about his victory, while roughly the same share say they are disappointed (33%) or angry (15%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"among-republicans\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Among Republicans<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans\u2019 reactions to Trump\u2019s win are roughly similar to how they felt after Trump\u2019s first victory in 2016. Today, 46% say they feel relieved, roughly the same as the share who said this in 2016 (48%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans are somewhat more likely to say they are excited today than they were eight years ago (43% vs. 38%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"among-democrats\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Among Democrats<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As in 2016, Democrats have overwhelmingly negative reactions to Trump\u2019s victory. However, they are somewhat more likely to say they are angry this year and less likely to feel disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, 31% of Democrats say they are angry about Trump\u2019s win. In 2016, 26% felt angry. About two-thirds (68%) say they are not surprised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans are less likely than Democrats to say that they are surprised that Trump won the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only about a quarter of Republicans (24%) say they are surprised by the election results, compared with 42% of Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, sizable majorities of those who voted for both Trump and Hillary Clinton <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2016\/11\/21\/presidential-election-reactions-and-expectations\/\">said they were surprised<\/a> that Trump won.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As has been the case for nearly two decades, a majority of Americans are expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of the nation.
