The survey was conducted Oct. 7-13, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone who took part is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. The survey was conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2025\/02\/25\/ai-and-workers-methodology\/\">methodology<\/a> for more details.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial intelligence is not new to the workplace, but the debut of ChatGPT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/two-years-ago-chatgpt-triggered-110007527.html\">just over two years ago<\/a> ushered in an era of rapid expansion. American workers have mixed feelings about how this technology will affect jobs in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-200-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=200183\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dfe4e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dfe4e3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/ST_2024.2.24_AI-workers_00-01.png?resize=400,870 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"435\" width=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/ST_2024.2.24_AI-workers_00-01.png?w=200\" alt=\"Chart shows Workers are more worried than hopeful about future AI use in the workplace\" class=\"wp-image-200183 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About half of workers (52%) say they\u2019re worried about the future impact of AI use in the workplace, and 32% think it will lead to fewer job opportunities for them in the long run, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while 36% of workers also say they feel hopeful about how AI may be used in the workplace in the future, a similar share (33%) say they feel overwhelmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About one-in-six workers (16%) say at least some of their work is currently done with AI. And an additional 25% say, while they\u2019re not using it much now, at least some of their work <em>can <\/em>be done with AI. These shares are significantly higher among young workers and workers with at least a bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey, conducted Oct. 7-13 among 5,273 employed U.S. adults, explores how workers see the use of AI in the workplace overall, as well as their own experience with AI in their jobs.[1. About a third (32%) say it will lead to <em>fewer <\/em>opportunities for them, and 31% say it will not make much difference. Some 17% of workers have not heard about the use of AI in the workplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workers with lower and middle incomes are more likely than those with upper incomes to say workplace AI use will lead to fewer job opportunities for them. This includes 63% who say they don\u2019t use AI much or at all in their job and 17% who have not heard of AI use in the workplace.[2. Figures do not add up to total due to rounding.] <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI users are generally younger: 73% are under 50, compared with 65% among non-AI users. And about half of AI users (51%) have at least a bachelor\u2019s degree, compared with 39% of non-AI users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Among non-AI users, 31% say at least some of their work <em>can<\/em> be done with AI.
