About a third (34%) say they have five or more close friends \u2013 fairly similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/10\/12\/what-does-friendship-look-like-in-america\/\">share of U.S. adults<\/a> who say the same. Only 2% of teens say they have no close friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teens\u2019 friends are often the same gender as them. About half of teens who have at least one close friend (49%) say <em>all<\/em> of their friends are the same gender as them. Another 48% say their friends are a mix of genders, while only 2% of teens say none of their friends are the same gender as them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no major differences between teen boys and girls in the number of friends they have or the gender makeup of their close friend circles. However, there are some notable gender gaps on this question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boys are less likely than girls to say they have a close friend they can turn to if they need emotional support. Still a large majority of boys (85%) say they do; 16% say they don\u2019t have a friend they can turn to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among teen girls, 95% say they have a close friend they can go to for emotional support, while only 5% say they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-200-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=202029\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e5e0d0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e5e0d0;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_3-03.png?resize=400,1102 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"551\" width=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/03\/ST_2025.3.13_teens-and-gender_3-03.png?w=200\" alt=\"Chart shows Majority of teens say girls have it easier when it comes to having friends for emotional support\" class=\"wp-image-202029 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relatedly, a <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2025\/01\/16\/men-women-and-social-connections\/\">recent Center survey of adults<\/a> found a significant gap in the shares of women and men who said they would be extremely or very likely to turn to a friend as a source emotional support (54% of women vs. 38% of men).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also asked teens whether they think boys or girls have it <em>easier<\/em> when it comes to having friends they can turn to for emotional support. A 58% majority of teens say girls have it easier. About a third (35%) say it\u2019s about the same for both, while only 7% say boys have it easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teen girls and boys gave similar answers on this question, with majorities of each group saying girls have it easier.
