This analysis seeks to examine the public\u2019s feelings about the behavior of party leaders, party issues and how well each of the major parties represent Americans. For this analysis, we surveyed 3,445 U.S. adults from Sept. 22 to 28, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education, presidential vote (among voters) and other factors. <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.29_views-of-republican-democratic-parties_questionnaire.pdf\">questions used for this report<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.29_views-of-republican-democratic-parties_topline.pdf\">topline<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2025\/10\/30\/political-parties-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the 2026 midterm elections a year away, neither the Republican nor Democratic Party is widely seen as having good ideas. And both are viewed by majorities as too extreme and not governing honestly and ethically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=278011\"><img data-dominant-color=\"edeae4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #edeae4;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.29_views-of-republican-democratic-parties_00-01.png?resize=480,647 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.29_views-of-republican-democratic-parties_00-01.png?resize=620,836 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"418\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.29_views-of-republican-democratic-parties_00-01.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Most Americans don\u2019t see either party as governing honestly and ethically\" class=\"wp-image-278011 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>39% of Americans describe the Republican Party as governing ethically and honestly \u2013 and about the same share (42%) say this about the Democratic Party.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Majorities continue to view both parties as too extreme in their positions \u2013 though more apply this to the GOP (61%) than the Democratic Party (57%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Majorities are also frustrated with both parties, and about half say each makes them angry. A Pew Research Center survey of 3,445 U.S. adults conducted Sept. 22-28 (just before the now monthlong government shutdown) also finds that just 36% say the Republican Party makes them feel hopeful, with even fewer (28%) saying this about the Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frustration runs particularly high among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, who are frustrated not just with Republicans \u2013 who control the White House and both chambers of Congress \u2013 but with <em>their own party<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=278012\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f0efef\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f0efef;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.29_views-of-republican-democratic-parties_00-02.png?resize=480,771 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.29_views-of-republican-democratic-parties_00-02.png?resize=620,996 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"498\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/PP_2025.10.29_views-of-republican-democratic-parties_00-02.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows Democrats\u2019 frustration with their party rises as hope declines; Republicans feel much more positively about the GOP\" class=\"wp-image-278012 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>67% of Democrats say their own party makes them feel frustrated in the September survey \u2013 far higher than the roughly half who said this in 2021 and 2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asked the main reason for their frustration, the dominant pre-shutdown response of frustrated Democrats (41%) is that the party has not pushed back hard enough against the Trump administration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, Republican frustration with the GOP is far lower than in 2021: 40% of Republicans and Republican leaners say they are frustrated with their party. The Democratic Party, in contrast, continues to hold advantages on policies concerning health care, the environment and climate, abortion, and race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Americans are now about equally likely to agree with the Republican and Democratic parties when it comes to policies affecting people who are lesbian, gay and transgender \u2013 a shift from recent years. Many other answers hit on related themes: 13% offer criticisms of the Democratic Party\u2019s leadership, while 10% point to a lack of a cohesive message or agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/09\/30\/americans-view-trump-vance-and-congressional-leaders-in-both-parties-more-negatively-than-positively\/\"><em>Americans view Trump, Vance and congressional leaders in both parties more negatively than positively<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Large shares of Americans say they agree with <em>neither <\/em>party on two of the central foreign policy issues today \u2013 the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza and Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/strong> Nearly half (46%) \u2013 including 52% of Democrats and 36% of Republicans \u2013 say this about the Israel-Hamas conflict. More than a third (36%) say the same when it comes to Russia and Ukraine. But overwhelming shares in both parties say officials who advocate violence against the other party should not be accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most continue to see large differences between the two parties. <\/strong>Six-in-ten Americans say there is a great deal of difference in what the Democratic and Republican parties stand for, and another 27% say there is a fair amount of difference between the parties. Only 12% say there is hardly any difference at all in what the parties stand for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most Republicans and Democrats say it\u2019s very important for the <em>other party\u2019s <\/em>elected officials to compromise with officials in their party to solve problems. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2019\/06\/19\/trumps-impact-on-the-tone-of-political-debate-important-characteristics-for-elected-officials\/#7f2c333e24072d3bf5193f7b09415cda\">As in the past<\/a>, wide majorities of Democrats (78%) and Republicans (71%) say it\u2019s very important for the other party\u2019s politicians to compromise with those in the party they support.
