Critics claim the order amounts to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/democratic-congressman-blasts-president-trumps-religiously-based-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ban on Muslims<\/a>. Debate over the ban raises a broader question: whether religion should matter when it comes to seeking asylum or citizenship in the United States, and what it means to be a \u201ctrue\u201d American.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Pew Research Center <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2017\/02\/01\/what-it-takes-to-truly-be-one-of-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey<\/a> conducted in 2016 found that about a third (32 percent) of Americans believe it is very important for a person to be Christian in order to be considered truly American.
