Everyone who took part is a member of the Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">American Trends Panel<\/a>. The survey represents the views of U.S. working parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/ST_2026.6.16_working-parents_questionnaire.pdf\">survey questions<\/a> used for this report, the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/ST_2026.6.16_working-parents_topline.pdf\">detailed responses<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2026\/06\/16\/working-parents-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to survey data, the report also includes analysis of parents in the labor force using data from the U.S. Census Bureau\u2019s Current Population Survey.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As many workers face <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/02\/5-days-in-office-is-the-least-popular-way-to-work-bosses-require-it-anyway.html\">return-to-office mandates<\/a>, some parents have been able to maintain remote or hybrid work arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=317143\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d5e0de\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d5e0de;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/ST_2026.6.16_working-parents_2-01.png?resize=480,850 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/ST_2026.6.16_working-parents_2-01.png?resize=620,1098 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"549\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/ST_2026.6.16_working-parents_2-01.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows About a quarter of working parents work from home at least some of the time\" class=\"wp-image-317143 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A majority of working parents (65%) say they have a job that cannot be done from home. But 35% say that, for the most part, their job <em>can<\/em> be done from home. This latter share includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>17% who say they now work from home all or most of the time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10% who work from home some of the time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>9% who rarely or never work from home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These shares are roughly unchanged from 2024, but down significantly from 2020 and 2022 when the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/coronavirus-disease-covid-19\/\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a> forced many workers to shift to telework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We wanted to understand how working from home impacts parents\u2019 ability to balance work and family life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These findings are part of a larger survey of 2,242 working parents conducted March 2-15, 2026. <em>Read <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2026\/06\/16\/for-working-parents-the-boundary-between-work-and-family-is-often-blurred\/#Key-takeaways\">key findings<\/a> from the full study.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Working from home doesn\u2019t ease all the challenges of balancing work and family.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It turns out that parents who work from home and those who don\u2019t are about equally likely to experience difficulty in this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar shares of parents who work from home <em>all or most<\/em> of the time, <em>some<\/em> of the time, or <em>rarely or never<\/em> (including those whose job cannot be done from home) say that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Balancing their work and family responsibilities is difficult<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having a job makes it harder for them to be a good parent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They\u2019ve felt like they couldn\u2019t give 100% at home because they were juggling work and family responsibilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Refer to the appendix for <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2026\/06\/16\/working-parents-appendix-detailed-tables\/\">detailed tables<\/a> showing responses by remote work arrangement.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Parents who work from home are more likely to say their work and parenting tasks class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who frequently work from home are among the most likely to say they often take care of <em>parenting-related tasks<\/em> while working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>39% of parents who work from home all or most of the time say they do this extremely or very often.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>28% of parents who work from home some of the time and 25% of those who rarely or never work from home say the same.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to taking care of <em>work-related tasks<\/em> while with their children, the pattern is somewhat different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>About a third of parents who work from home all or most of the time (34%) or some of the time (31%) say they do this often.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only 19% of those who rarely or never work from home say the same.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There are some advantages for parents who work from home.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=317146\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dce2e1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: frequently work from home have an easier time attending their children\u2019s activities compared with those who work from home less often or never.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two-thirds of parents who work from home all or most of the time say they have a lot of flexibility to attend their children\u2019s activities during regular work hours.
