Everyone who took part is a member of the Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">American Trends Panel<\/a>. The survey represents the views of U.S. working parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/ST_2026.6.16_working-parents_questionnaire.pdf\">survey questions<\/a> used for this report, the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/ST_2026.6.16_working-parents_topline.pdf\">detailed responses<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2026\/06\/16\/working-parents-methodology\/\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to survey data, the report also includes analysis of parents in the labor force using data from the U.S. Census Bureau\u2019s Current Population Survey.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As many working parents struggle with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/sponsor-content\/2026\/03\/24\/child-care-costs-are-driving-the-affordability-debate-in-2026\">cost of childcare<\/a>, the issue has become a focus for policymakers across the political spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked 849 working parents with at least one child age 5 or younger about their experiences finding care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=317149\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e6e7e1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e6e7e1;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/ST_2026.6.16_working-parents_3-01.png?resize=480,743 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/ST_2026.6.16_working-parents_3-01.png?resize=620,960 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"480\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/06\/ST_2026.6.16_working-parents_3-01.png?w=310\" alt=\"Chart shows For working parents, cost is the biggest challenge in finding childcare\" class=\"wp-image-317149 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parents value quality of childcare over any other factor. But across income levels,<strong> cost is among the biggest challenges<\/strong> in finding childcare that suits their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About half (48%) of working parents who need care for a child age 5 or younger say it\u2019s difficult to find an arrangement that meets their cost expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond quality, majorities of parents also place a great deal of importance on hours of availability, location and educational opportunities when looking for childcare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Workplace childcare<\/strong> is an area where what parents value and what\u2019s available to them are out of sync. A majority (59%) of working parents with children 5 or younger \u2013 including 68% of working moms with a kid in this age group \u2013 say it would be extremely or very helpful to have onsite childcare at their workplace. But just 7% say this is available to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many parents use <strong>multiple care arrangements<\/strong> to cover their work hours. Among parents who say they have an extremely or very predictable work schedule, 48% report that it\u2019s easy to find care that meets their expectations on hours of availability. A much smaller share of parents with a somewhat or less predictable work schedule (30%) say the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For parents whose work hours vary, the difficulty of finding care often coincides with a need to cobble together several care arrangements each week. Among parents who say their work schedule is somewhat or less predictable, 45% say they use more than one care arrangement for the same child.
