It also explores how young adults are thinking about marriage and parenthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the key findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Most parents say the successes and failures of their young adult children (those ages 18 to 34) reflect on the job they\u2019ve done as parents.<\/strong> This view is most common among dads and parents with higher incomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Parents have generally positive views of how things are going in their young adult children\u2019s lives. <\/strong>Most say they feel proud (83%) and hopeful (75%) extremely or very often. Far smaller shares say they frequently feel worried (22%) or disappointed (4%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>69% of young adults who have never been married say they want to get married someday.<\/strong> A smaller share of those who aren\u2019t parents (51%) say they want to have children someday. Still, majorities of both say this is the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These assessments also vary by income. About eight-in-ten parents with upper incomes (81%) say their young adult children\u2019s successes and failures reflect on them as parents at least a fair amount. For this question, parents with more than one child in the 18-to-34 age range were asked to think of a specific child (who was randomly selected) when answering these questions.[4. numoffset=&#8221;4&#8243; Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2024\/01\/25\/parents-of-young-adults-methodology\/\">Methodology<\/a> section for more detail.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parents generally feel positive about how things are going in the lives of their young adult children. Most say they feel proud (83%) and hopeful (75%) extremely or very often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far smaller shares say they frequently feel worried (22%) or disappointed (4%). Still, 67% say they feel worried and about a quarter (26%) feel disappointed <em>at least sometimes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the most part, mothers and fathers give similar answers to these questions. But mothers are more likely than fathers to say they feel worried at least sometimes (70% vs. 63%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those answering about a child age 18 to 24 are more likely than those answering about an older adult child to say they worry at least sometimes about how things are going in their child\u2019s life (75%, compared with 66% of those answering about a child 25 to 29 and 59% of those answering about a child 30 to 34).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shares of parents who feel hopeful, proud and disappointed at least sometimes don\u2019t vary based on the child\u2019s age. There is no difference by gender in the shares of never-married young adults who say they would like to get married.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"do-young-adults-feel-pressured-to-get-married-or-have-children\">Do young adults feel pressured to get married or have children?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the most part, young adults who have a living parent don\u2019t feel much pressure or any pressure at all from their parents to get married or to have children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>73% of those who have never been married say they don\u2019t feel pressured to get married.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>67% of those who aren\u2019t parents say they don\u2019t feel pressured to have kids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar majorities of young men and women say they don\u2019t feel much pressure or any pressure at all from their parents to get married or have children.
