Mitt Romney<\/a> won the Arizona Republican primary by a large margin and secured a narrow victory in the Michigan Republican primary. In both states, Romney\u2019s support among born-again\/evangelical voters was weaker than among non-evangelicals, continuing the pattern<\/a> from previous primaries and caucuses in other states. Rick Santorum<\/a>, who finished second in both Arizona and Michigan, received his strongest support from evangelicals and from voters who said it matters a \u201cgreat deal\u201d to them that a candidate shares their religious beliefs, according to results from the National Election Pool exit polls.<\/p>\n\n

Michigan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

<\/a>In Michigan, 39% of the GOP electorate was comprised of white evangelical Protestants. Santorum was the clear winner of the evangelical vote, receiving 51% support from this group, compared with 35% for Romney.1<\/sup><\/a> The balance of opinion was reversed among non-evangelical voters in Michigan, with 45% voting for Romney and 30% supporting Santorum. Ron Paul<\/a> and Newt Gingrich<\/a> each finished far behind Romney and Santorum among both groups of Michigan GOP voters.<\/p>\n\n

There were few differences by religious affiliation in the Michigan primary. Among Protestants in the Michigan exit poll, 40% voted for Romney and 42% supported Santorum. Among Michigan Catholics, 44% voted for Romney while 37% backed Santorum.<\/p>\n\n

Santorum won the support of more than six-in-ten Michigan voters (63%) who said that it matters a \u201cgreat deal\u201d to them that a candidate shares their religious beliefs. Romney and Santorum ran about even among voters who said candidates\u2019 religious beliefs were \u201csomewhat\u201d important. And Romney was the clear favorite among the 44% of Michigan voters who said that the candidates\u2019 religious beliefs were not a key factor in their voting decision.<\/p>\n\n

Arizona<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In Arizona, Romney won by 20 points over Santorum, his closest rival. Among the 37% of the Arizona electorate comprised of white evangelicals, Romney and Santorum were virtually tied (35% of Arizona evangelicals voted for Romney, 37% for Santorum). By contrast, among non-evangelical voters in Arizona, Romney defeated Santorum by a 34-point margin (54% to 20%).<\/p>\n\n

<\/a>Romney was the clear choice of Protestants in Arizona, defeating Santorum by a 52% to 26% margin. Romney\u2019s victory among Protestants included overwhelming support from Arizona\u2019s large Mormon population; Mormons accounted for 14% of the Arizona electorate, and 93% of them cast their ballots for Romney.2<\/sup><\/a> Among Arizona Catholics, 44% voted for Romney and 34% voted for Santorum.<\/p>\n\n

In Arizona, Santorum\u2019s strongest support came from voters who attached a great deal of importance to candidates\u2019 religious beliefs; he secured 44% of their votes. Among all other Arizona voters, however \u2013 including those who said it is \u201csomewhat\u201d important to them that a candidate shares their religious beliefs \u2013 Romney was the clear winner.<\/p>\n\n

This analysis is based on results from exit polls conducted as voters left the polls during the Arizona and Michigan Republican primary elections.
