(Katherine Frey\/The Washington Post via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump has added Nigeria, Africa\u2019s most populous nation, to a list of countries whose residents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/31\/us\/politics\/trump-travel-ban.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">face restrictions<\/a> on travel into the United States. With the new policy set to take effect on Feb. 22, here are some fast facts about Nigeria and its immigrants in the U.S., based on previously published Pew Research Center studies.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nigeria is the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/07\/10\/for-world-population-day-a-look-at-the-countries-with-the-biggest-projected-gains-and-losses-by-2100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seventh most populous country in the world<\/a>, with 206 million people. By 2100, it is projected to be the world\u2019s <em>third<\/em> most populous country \u2013 ahead of the U.S. \u2013 with 733 million people, according to United Nations estimates. Nigeria is expected to add more people than any other country during that span.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many people in Nigeria have considered leaving the country. In a spring 2018 survey, 45% of Nigerian adults said they <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/03\/27\/many-nigerians-tunisians-and-kenyans-say-they-plan-to-leave-their-countries-in-the-next-five-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plan to move to another country<\/a> sometime within the next five years \u2013 by far the highest share of any country surveyed.<\/li>\n<li>Nigerians have a more positive view of Trump than people in many other countries. In a spring 2019 survey, 58% of Nigerian adults said they had confidence in Trump to <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2020\/01\/08\/trump-ratings-remain-low-around-globe-while-views-of-u-s-stay-mostly-favorable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">do the right thing regarding world affairs<\/a>, compared with a median of 29% across 32 nations surveyed by the Center.<\/li>\n<li>Many Nigerians <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/02\/12\/as-elections-near-nigerians-view-their-countrys-economy-and-political-system-negatively\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expressed pessimism<\/a> about their country\u2019s economic and political situation in a summer 2018 survey.<\/li>\n<li>Nigeria\u2019s population is almost <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2019\/04\/01\/the-countries-with-the-10-largest-christian-populations-and-the-10-largest-muslim-populations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">evenly split<\/a> between Muslims (50%) and Christians (48.1%), as of 2015. It has the world\u2019s fifth-largest Muslim population (90 million) and the world\u2019s sixth-largest Christian population (87 million).<\/li>\n<li>As of 2017, there were about <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/hispanic\/2019\/06\/03\/facts-on-u-s-immigrants-current-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">348,000 Nigerian immigrants living in the U.S.<\/a>, making Nigeria the top birthplace among African immigrants in the country.<\/li>\n<li>People in the U.S. sent <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/interactives\/remittance-flows-by-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$6.2 billion in remittances to Nigeria in 2017<\/a>, more than was sent to any other African nation.<\/li>\n<li>As of 2016, around six-in-ten black Nigerian immigrants in the U.S. (59%) <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2018\/01\/24\/key-facts-about-black-immigrants-in-the-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">had a bachelor\u2019s degree or more education<\/a> \u2013 a share roughly double that of the overall American population.
