The video-based platform serves as a forum for entertainers, commentators, businesses and others, and Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2018\/11\/07\/many-turn-to-youtube-for-childrens-content-news-how-to-lessons\/\">use it in a variety of ways<\/a>, from getting the news to learning new skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube marked its 20th anniversary in February. Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to provide key findings about how Americans use the popular video-sharing platform. All findings in this analysis come from previously published Center studies. Further information about the methodology of these studies, including survey field dates and sample sizes, are available by following the links in the text.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platform marked its 20th anniversary in February. To mark the occasion, here are five key findings about YouTube from our research:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More U.S. adults use YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/fact-sheet\/social-media\/\">than any other online platform we\u2019ve asked about<\/a>.<\/strong> As of 2024, 85% of adults say they ever use YouTube. Even among adults 65 and older \u2013 who are generally less likely than younger people to use various online platforms \u2013 65% use the video sharing platform. And most teens go on YouTube daily (73%). But as of 2024, U.S. adults are just as likely to get news from YouTube (32%) as they are from Facebook (33%). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And news consumption differs by gender. News consumers on YouTube are more likely to be men than women (57% vs. 42%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Around a quarter of adult YouTube users in the U.S. (24%) say they regularly get news from news influencers on any social media site.<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/11\/18\/americas-news-influencers\/#most-news-influencers-are-on-multiple-sites-but-x-is-the-most-common\">recent Pew Research Center analysis<\/a> of news influencers found that 44% of those in our sample are on YouTube, though most news influencers on YouTube also have a presence on several other sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/28\/5-facts-about-americans-and-youtube\/sr_25-02-28_youtube_4\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e5e4e4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"1110\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/SR_25.02.28_youtube_4.png?resize=400,1110 400w\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/SR_25.02.28_youtube_4.png?w=400\" alt=\"A pie chart showing that most news influencers on YouTube have not worked in the news industry.\" class=\"wp-image-201634 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e5e4e4; width:200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among these <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2024\/11\/18\/news-influencers-on-youtube\/\">YouTube news influencers<\/a>, 68% are men, while 28% are women. And a slightly larger share explicitly express a right-leaning political orientation (28%) than a left-leaning one (21%). Another 46% don\u2019t express any clear political orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vast majority of news influencers on YouTube (88%) have not worked in the news industry.
