But while Republicans largely lament the trend, Democrats are split in their reactions.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/ft_19-11-15_partisansreligion_reps-dems-different-views\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-420323361\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/FT_19.11.15_PartisansReligion_reps-dems-different-views.png?w=420\" alt=\"Republicans and Democrats have very different views about religion\u2019s impact on public life\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A majority of U.S. adults who identify with or lean toward the GOP (63%) say that religion is losing influence in American life and that this is a \u201cbad thing,\u201d while just 7% say it is a \u201cgood thing,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2019\/11\/15\/americans-have-positive-views-about-religions-role-in-society-but-want-it-out-of-politics\">a recent Pew Research Center survey<\/a>. But there is no clear consensus among Democrats and Democratic leaners: Similar shares either say religion\u2019s declining influence is a bad thing (27%) or a good thing (25%), while 22% say that it doesn\u2019t make a difference. At the same time, a quarter (24%) feel that religion is <em>gaining<\/em> influence in society.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more-->This partisan gap manifests itself in several other ways. Most Republicans say churches and other religious organizations generally do more good than harm in American society (71%), strengthen morality in society (68%) and mostly bring people together rather than push them apart (65%), while fewer than half of Democrats take each of these positions. Republicans also are much more likely than Democrats to say religious leaders have \u201chigh\u201d or \u201cvery high\u201d ethical standards (76% vs. 57%) and that religious people are generally more trustworthy than nonreligious people (32% vs. 13%), although most in both parties say religious and nonreligious people are equally trustworthy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these gaps, Democrats and those who lean Democratic are not uniformly secular or anti-religion. In fact, there is a stark divide <em>within<\/em> the Democratic Party when it comes to views toward religion, much of it along racial and ethnic lines. While white Democrats are relatively lukewarm about religion\u2019s role in society, black Democrats consistently express more positive views. Just 9% of black Democrats and 18% of Hispanic Democrats say it is a <em>good<\/em> thing that religion is losing influence in society, compared with one-third of white Democrats (33%) who say this.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/ft_19-11-15_partisansreligion_most-dems-conservative-control\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-420323360\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/FT_19.11.15_PartisansReligion_most-dems-conservative-control.png?w=420\" alt=\"Most Democrats say religious conservatives have too much control over GOP\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, religiously unaffiliated voters make up a <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2018\/03\/20\/changing-composition-of-the-electorate-and-partisan-coalitions\/#religiously-unaffiliated-voters-make-up-increasing-share-of-democrats\">growing share of Democrats<\/a>, while religious conservatives have long been an important part of the Republican coalition. With these patterns in mind, the survey also asked all respondents about the amount of influence that religious conservatives have over the GOP, and the amount of control that nonreligious liberals have over the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Democrats and Democratic leaners say religious conservatives have too much control over the GOP, and most Republicans and their leaners say liberals who are not religious have too much control over the Democratic Party. But relatively few express these concerns about their own party.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, U.S. adults have widely differing assessments of the two major parties\u2019 stances toward religion. A slim majority of Americans (54%) say the GOP is friendly toward religion, while just 13% say it is unfriendly. The prevailing view about the Democratic Party is that it is neutral toward religion (48%), while about three-in-ten Americans (31%) \u2013 including a clear majority of Republicans (61%) \u2013 say the Democratic Party is unfriendly toward religion.
