While 94% of the world\u2019s Hindus live in India, there also are substantial populations of Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and adherents of folk religions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most Indians, faith is important: In a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/11\/18\/global-support-for-principle-of-free-expression-but-opposition-to-some-forms-of-speech\/\">2015 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>, eight-in-ten Indians said religion is very important in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are five facts about religion in India:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/04\/21\/by-2050-india-to-have-worlds-largest-populations-of-hindus-and-muslims\/ft_15-04-17_indiagrowth\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-269143\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/FT_15.04.17_indiaGrowth.png\" alt=\"Population Growth of the World's Largest Religions in India\" class=\"wp-image-269143\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>India\u2019s massive population includes not only the vast majority of the world\u2019s Hindus, but also the second-largest group of Muslims within a&nbsp;single country, behind only Indonesia<\/strong>. By 2050, India\u2019s Muslim population will grow to 311 million, making it the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2015\/04\/21\/by-2050-india-to-have-worlds-largest-populations-of-hindus-and-muslims\/\">largest Muslim population in the world<\/a>, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2015\/04\/02\/religious-projections-2010-2050\/\">Pew Research Center projections<\/a>. Still, Indian Muslims are projected to remain a minority in their country, making up about 18% of the total population at midcentury, while Hindus figure to remain a majority (about 77%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>India is a religiously pluralistic and multiethnic democracy \u2013 the largest in the world.<\/strong>&nbsp;Its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constituteproject.org\/constitution\/India_2016?lang=en\">constitution<\/a> provides for freedom of conscience and the right to profess, practice and propagate religion. It has protections for minorities against discrimination on the grounds of religion or caste (a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-35650616\">strict social stratification based on Hinduism<\/a>). In 1976, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.india.gov.in\/my-government\/constitution-india\/amendments\/constitution-india-forty-second-amendment-act-1976\">constitution was amended<\/a>, officially making the country a secular state. At the same time, a directive in the constitution prohibits the slaughter of cows \u2013 an animal Hindus hold sacred \u2013 which each state has the authority to enforce. Currently,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/Tier2_INDIA.pdf\">21 out of 29 states<\/a>&nbsp;have prison sentences for the act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2018-06-28_religionindia_gri_420px\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f5f4f4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f5f4f4;\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018.06.28_religionIndia_GRI_420px.png\" alt=\"Indians experience high levels of government restrictions on religion\" class=\"wp-image-303909 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>While there are legal protections for religious groups and minorities, Indians still generally experience \u201chigh\u201d levels of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/06\/19152148\/APPENDIX-A.pdf\">government restrictions on religion<\/a><\/strong>, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2018\/06\/21\/number-of-countries-with-very-high-government-restrictions-on-religion-at-highest-level-since-2007\/\">an annual Pew Research Center study<\/a>. There are&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/Tier2_INDIA.pdf\">legal restrictions on religious conversions<\/a>&nbsp;in at least six states that have at times been used to arrest and intimidate Muslims and Christians who proselytize, according to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. Additionally,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/India.2017.pdf\">Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs<\/a>&nbsp;are legally considered Hindus and are unable to access social services or employment and educational preferences available to other religious minority groups. Meanwhile, Christians and Muslims who identify as low-caste Dalits \u2013 some of whom are&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-36220329\">descendants of Hindu Dalits<\/a>&nbsp;who converted to escape caste discrimination \u2013 are&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicannews.org\/news\/2016\/08\/equality-demanded-for-dalit-christians-and-muslims.aspx\">restricted from accessing educational and employment benefits<\/a>&nbsp;traditionally reserved for Hindu Dalits. Despite these restrictions,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/Tier2_INDIA.pdf\">India\u2019s Supreme Court has upheld protections<\/a>&nbsp;for minorities in some religious freedom cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2018-06-28_religionindia_shi_420px\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018.06.28_religionIndia_SHI_420px.png\" alt=\"India has very high levels of religion-related social hostilities\" class=\"wp-image-303910\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>India also has experienced \u201cvery high\u201d levels of religion-related social hostilities in the past decade<\/strong>, according to the same&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2018\/06\/21\/number-of-countries-with-very-high-government-restrictions-on-religion-at-highest-level-since-2007\/#countries-with-the-most-extensive-social-hostilities-involving-religion\">Pew Research Center study<\/a>. In fact, since we began tracking this issue in 2007, the country has consistently scored \u201cvery high\u201d on the study\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2018\/06\/19152147\/APPENDIX-B-1.pdf\">Social Hostilities Index<\/a>. Much of the hostility is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/j\/drl\/rls\/hrrpt\/humanrightsreport\/index.htm?year=2017&amp;dlid=277281#wrapper\">directed against low-caste Dalits<\/a>, according to the U.S. State Department. Religious minorities, including Buddhists, Christians, Jains, Muslims and Sikhs,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/Tier2_INDIA.pdf\">also are harassed<\/a>. In recent years there has been a surge in mob attacks by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/india-politics-religion-cows\/\">Hindu vigilante groups<\/a>&nbsp;against&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/India.2017.pdf\">Dalit and Muslim<\/a>&nbsp;consumers and traders in the beef, dairy and leather industries. Additionally, Dalit women are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/j\/drl\/rls\/hrrpt\/humanrightsreport\/index.htm?year=2017&amp;dlid=277281#wrapper\">disproportionately victims of sexual violence<\/a>&nbsp;due to their caste, while Muslim women and girls also have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/11\/world\/asia\/india-girl-rape.html\">targeted due to their religion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/11\/13112555\/PG_2017.11.15_India-Modi_3-04.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">Communal tensions \u2013 between Indians of various religious faiths and castes \u2013 have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/british\/modern\/partition1947_01.shtml\">long plagued Indian society<\/a>. <strong>Most Indians are at least somewhat concerned about these tensions, but even larger shares are worried about other national issues, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2017\/11\/15\/indians-satisfied-with-countrys-direction-but-worry-about-crime-terrorism\/\">2017 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>.<\/strong>&nbsp; Almost four-in-ten Indians (37%) said \u201ccommunal relations\u201d are a very big problem in their country, while an additional 31% named this as a moderately big problem.
