By contrast, 64% of European thought leaders are satisfied with how their democracy is functioning.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These assessments come from a recent canvass of attendees at the German Marshall Fund\u2019s annual Brussels Forum and of alumni of various GMF fellowship and educational programs. Respondents included 237 Europeans and 110 Americans.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">American foreign policy experts are also more pessimistic than their European counterparts when it comes to trust in their country\u2019s national government. About four-in-ten U.S. experts (42%) say they trust their government to do what is right for the country. Among European foreign policy thought leaders, the share who say this is 19 percentage points higher (61%).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, the U.S. and European <em>publics<\/em> are much more aligned when it comes to being satisfied with democracy and trusting their national government.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1 wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"s1\">In the U.S., 46% of adults\u00a0are <\/span><span class=\"s2\">at least somewhat satisfied<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0with the way democracy is working in the country while 51% voice dissatisfaction, according to a spring 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2017\/10\/16\/globally-broad-support-for-representative-and-direct-democracy\/\"><span class=\"s3\">Pew Research Center survey<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1 wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"s1\">Across 10 European Union nations, a median of 48% are satisfied with how democracy is working and 50% are dissatisfied. Levels of satisfaction vary widely between nations, ranging from 79% in Sweden and 77% in the Netherlands who are pleased with their democracy to just 21% of Greeks and 25% of Spaniards.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1 wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"s1\">When it comes to trust in government, about half of the American public (51%)<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0say they trust the U.S. government to do what is right \u201ca lot\u201d (15%) or \u201csomewhat\u201d (36%).<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0(This wording is somewhat different from a question about <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2017\/12\/14\/government-gets-lower-ratings-for-handling-health-care-environment-disaster-response\/\"><span class=\"s3\">trust in the federal government<\/span><\/a> that has been asked since the 1950s in the United States.) \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Europe, a median of 46% trust their government, while a median of 52% distrust it.
