And when asked about proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum, more say they would be bad for the country than say they would be good.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A majority of U.S. adults (56%) say free trade agreements have been a \u201cgood thing\u201d for the country as a whole, while 30% say they have been a \u201cbad thing.\u201d That is the highest share expressing positive views of free trade agreements in three years, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2018\/05\/10\/public-supports-u-s-talks-with-north-korea-many-doubt-whether-its-leaders-are-serious\">new survey by Pew Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2018\/05\/10\/americans-are-generally-positive-about-free-trade-agreements-more-critical-of-tariff-increases\/ft_18-05-10_trade-tariffs_positive_views\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-302317\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f6f5f2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f6f5f2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"638\" height=\"421\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/05\/FT_18.05.10_trade-tariffs_positive_views.png?resize=480,317 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/05\/FT_18.05.10_trade-tariffs_positive_views.png?resize=638,421 638w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-22133 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/05\/FT_18.05.10_trade-tariffs_positive_views.png\" alt=\"\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the change has come among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, who now are evenly divided in their views of free trade agreements\u2019 impact on the country. While 46% say these agreements have been a bad thing for the country, nearly as many (43%) say they have been a good thing. In the final weeks of the presidential campaign in October 2016, 63% of Republicans viewed free trade agreements negatively, while just 29% said they were a good thing.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, Democratic views of free trade agreements remain overwhelmingly positive: Two-thirds (67%) say free trade agreements have been good for the U.S, while just 19% say they have been bad. In October 2016, a smaller majority of Democrats (59%) viewed trade agreements positively.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2018\/05\/10\/americans-are-generally-positive-about-free-trade-agreements-more-critical-of-tariff-increases\/ft_18-05-10_trade-tariffs_partisan_divide\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-302316\"><img data-dominant-color=\"edeae3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #edeae3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"445\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/05\/FT_18.05.10_trade-tariffs_partisan_divide.png?resize=420,445 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-22129 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2018\/05\/FT_18.05.10_trade-tariffs_partisan_divide.png\" alt=\"\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partisan divide is even more pronounced in views about raising tariffs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans generally have a positive view of potential increases in tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. About six-in-ten (58%) say they would be good for the country, while just 26% say such tariff increases would be bad for the country. Democratic opinion is the opposite: Only 22% of Democrats think increasing steel and aluminum tariffs would be good for the U.S., while 63% say they would be bad for the country.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Trump administration\u2019s proposals to increase tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from other countries have drawn significant attention among business interests and foreign leaders, a substantial share of the U.S. public has heard little or nothing about these proposals.<\/p>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-photo size-full wp-image-302318 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/FT_18.05.10_trade-tariffs_views_most_polarized.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"563\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just 29% of the public says it has heard \u201ca lot\u201d about proposals to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum, and 41% say they have heard \u201ca little.\u201d Roughly three-in-ten (29%) say they have heard \u201cnothing at all\u201d about these proposals.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partisan gap in views of tariffs is substantially wider among those who have heard \u201ca lot\u201d about the proposals than those who have not: Two-thirds (67%) of Republicans who have heard a lot about the proposed tariffs say they will be a good thing for the country, compared with just 8% of Democrats who have heard a lot about them.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Read the <a
