Unlike many of their fellow European Union members, Germans are satisfied with the state of the economy and are broadly positive toward the political establishment that has led the nation through the post-World War II era.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/09\/19\/going-into-election-germans-are-happy-with-their-economy-and-political-establishment\/ft_17-09-18_germany_economy\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f5f4f1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f5f4f1;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"337\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/FT_17.09.18_Germany_economy.png?resize=420,337 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-22441 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/FT_17.09.18_Germany_economy.png\" alt=\"\" data-attachid=\"295215\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An overwhelming 86% of Germans believe their economy is doing well, up from 75% last year, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in spring. Views of the economy have been consistently positive since 2011, reflecting Germany\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/11\/business\/economy\/a-faster-recovery-in-germany-than-elsewhere.html?mcubz=1\">quick<\/a> recovery from the global financial crisis. By comparison, just 2% of Greeks, 15% of Italians, 21% of French and 28% of Spanish say their <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2017\/06\/05\/1-mixed-views-as-some-economies-recover-others-slow\/\">economies<\/a> are doing well.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany boasts one of Europe\u2019s lowest unemployment rates \u2013 just <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php\/Unemployment_statistics\">3.7%<\/a> \u2013 while neighbors like Italy struggle to pull unemployment into the single digits. And growth of Germany\u2019s gross domestic product <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/documents\/2995521\/8213935\/2-07092017-AP-EN.pdf\/6fe1f60c-51e2-4b98-9d14-ca6ea5c7e260\">accelerated<\/a> in 2017, building on several years of positive economic growth.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/09\/19\/going-into-election-germans-are-happy-with-their-economy-and-political-establishment\/ft_17-09-18_germany_parties\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-295217\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ebe6d8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ebe6d8;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"307\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/FT_17.09.18_Germany_parties.png?resize=310,307 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-22453 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/FT_17.09.18_Germany_parties.png\" alt=\"\" data-attachid=\"295217\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the political front, Germany\u2019s mainstream parties enjoy widespread support. A 58% majority have a favorable opinion of Merkel\u2019s center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and a 68% majority like the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD). This stands in stark contrast to France, Greece, Italy, Spain and the UK, where <em>all<\/em> political parties tend to be <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2017\/06\/15\/few-political-parties-in-europe-have-widespread-appeal\/\">unpopular<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), on the other hand, is extremely unpopular. More than eight-in-ten Germans have an unfavorable opinion of the AfD, with 55% saying their view of the party is<em> very<\/em> unfavorable.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the AfD\u2019s lack of popularity, political observers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/german-right-wing-party-on-course-to-enter-parliament\/2017\/09\/13\/584483de-9866-11e7-af6a-6555caaeb8dc_story.html?utm_term=.77cf9c47d91f\">expect<\/a> the party to win enough votes to secure representation in Germany\u2019s parliament for the first time. The AfD, known for its Euroskeptic views and strong opposition to immigration, is more popular among Germans who dislike the EU and those who see the large number of refugees leaving countries like Iraq and Syria as a major threat to their country. Men, those without a college degree and those on the right of the political spectrum are also more likely to hold a favorable view of the AfD.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a class=\"image-box\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2017\/09\/19\/going-into-election-germans-are-happy-with-their-economy-and-political-establishment\/ft_17-09-18_germany_merkel\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-295216\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e4e6d5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e4e6d5;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"475\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/FT_17.09.18_Germany_Merkel.png?resize=310,475 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-22447 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2017\/09\/FT_17.09.18_Germany_Merkel.png\" alt=\"\" data-attachid=\"295216\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Germany <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/06\/world\/europe\/germany-prepares-for-turbulence-in-the-trump-era.html?mcubz=1&amp;mtrref=www.google.com\">expands<\/a> its international role, the vast majority of the public (81%) is also feeling good about Merkel\u2019s capacity to do the right thing on the world stage.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, demographic groups differ somewhat in their trust of the chancellor\u2019s international leadership. Germans ages 50 and older have more confidence in Merkel than their younger counterparts and women are more likely to feel this way than men. Despite the chancellor\u2019s center-right political orientation, those on the political left are actually 11 percentage points more likely than those on the right to say they have confidence in Merkel\u2019s ability to deal with foreign affairs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence in Merkel\u2019s approach to international affairs is quite high in Northern and Western Europe. And <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2017\/06\/26\/u-s-image-suffers-as-publics-around-world-question-trumps-leadership\/\">globally<\/a>, Merkel earns more confidence (a median of 42% across 37 nations) than Chinese President Xi Jinping (28%), Russian President Vladimir Putin (27%) or U.S. President Donald Trump (22%).<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An overwhelming 86% of Germans believe their economy is doing well, up from 75% last year.
