Before bedtime, to avoid nightmares, some parents may try to reassure their kids that ghosts are not real.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2009\/12\/09\/many-americans-mix-multiple-faiths\/#ghosts-fortunetellers-and-communicating-with-the-dead\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f3e8d9\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f3e8d9;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"555\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2013\/10\/PF_13.10.31_Supernatural_310px.png?resize=310,555 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-24374 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2013\/10\/PF_13.10.31_Supernatural_310px.png\" alt=\"PF_13.10.31_Supernatural_310px (1)\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not all of those parents may buy their own reassurances:\u00a0 Nearly one-in-five U.S. adults (18%) say they\u2019ve seen or been in the presence of a ghost, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2009\/12\/09\/many-americans-mix-multiple-faiths\/#ghosts-fortunetellers-and-communicating-with-the-dead\">2009 Pew Research Center survey<\/a>. An even greater share \u2013 29% \u2013 say they have felt in touch with someone who has already died.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Claude Fischer, a professor of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, explored Americans\u2019 persisting beliefs in some supernatural phenomena in a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.berkeley.edu\/2013\/10\/29\/boo-americans-and-the-occult\/\">2013 blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we approach Halloween, note that <i>most<\/i> American adults in the 21st Century say that they believe in life after death and in the devil,\u201d Fischer wrote, citing data from Gallup and other sources. \u201cOver one-third say that they believe in the spirits of the dead coming back; about that many also say they believe in haunted houses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the influence of modern secularism and science, he observed, \u201cthe magic has not totally gone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does going to church help keep ghosts away? It\u2019s impossible to say, but people who often go to worship services appear to be less likely to say they see ghosts. Just 11% of those who attend religious services at least weekly say they\u2019ve been in the presence of a ghost, while 23% of those who attend services less frequently say they have seen a ghost, the
