This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. An additional 18% say it is somewhat important, and 8% say it is a little or not at all important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some demographic groups are more likely to view press freedom as highly important to society. For instance, White and Asian Americans (78% each) are more likely than Hispanic (61%) and Black (60%) Americans to say it is extremely or very important. U.S. adults with more formal education and higher income levels also are significantly more likely than those with less formal education and lower incomes to say this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no major differences by political party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"views-of-press-freedom-and-potential-restrictions\">Views of press freedom and potential restrictions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most U.S. adults (79%) believe the media are at least somewhat free to report the news in the country. However, only a third say they\u2019re <em>completely<\/em> free to do so. This includes about half of Americans who say news organizations are influenced <em>a great deal <\/em>by financial interests (51%) or by political interests (49%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fewer than one-in-ten U.S. adults say news organizations are not influenced very much or at all by financial (6%) or political (8%) interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent high-profile incidents such as <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kansas-newspaper-raid-investigation-legislature-9af42d3ca446758551133c1273114304\">a police raid on a Kansas newsroom<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/the_media_today\/tim-burke-florida-journalist-fbi-raid-indictment-mark-rasch-justice.php\">a government seizure of a Florida journalist\u2019s materials<\/a> have raised questions about press freedom in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless of how free they think the press currently is, 41% of Americans are extremely or very concerned about potential restrictions on press freedoms in the country. An additional 29% are somewhat concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Journalists themselves are especially worried about possible restrictions on press freedom. In <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/05\/02\/most-u-s-journalists-are-concerned-about-press-freedoms\/\">a 2022 survey of U.S. journalists<\/a>, a majority of those surveyed (57%) said they were extremely or very concerned about this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"partisan-differences-in-views-of-press-freedom\">Partisan differences in views of press freedom<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some aspects of the debate over press freedom have been divided by political party in recent years. For example, former President Donald Trump has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/06\/politics\/kash-patel-trump-administration\/index.html\">adversarial toward journalists<\/a>, and Republicans have long <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-read\/2022\/05\/13\/support-for-more-regulation-of-tech-companies-has-declined-in-u-s-especially-among-republicans\/\">alleged that social media sites censor some political viewpoints<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-420-wide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=141373\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e3dedf\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e3dedf;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/04\/SR_24.04.23_press-freedom_3.png?resize=480,624 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/04\/SR_24.04.23_press-freedom_3.png?resize=782,1017 782w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/04\/SR_24.04.23_press-freedom_3.png?resize=840,1092 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"546\" width=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/04\/SR_24.04.23_press-freedom_3.png?w=788\" alt=\"A horizontal stacked bar chart showing that Republicans more likely than Democrats to say U.S. media are not very or not at all free to report news, and two-thirds of Republicans say news outlets are influenced a great deal by political interests.\" class=\"wp-image-141373 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the new Center survey, Republicans and independents who lean toward the GOP are consistently more likely than Democrats and Democratic leaners to express concerns about press freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say the media in the U.S. are completely free to report the news (38% vs. 29%), while Republicans are more likely than Democrats to say the media are not very or not at all free (29% vs. 12%). And 47% of Republicans say they are extremely or very concerned about potential restrictions on press freedoms, compared with 38% of Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans are also about twice as likely as Democrats to believe political interests have <em>a great deal<\/em> of influence on U.S. news organizations. Two-thirds of Republicans say this about political interests, compared with 34% of Democrats. Meanwhile, 46% of Americans say press freedom should always be protected, even if it means false information could be published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The groups that are more likely to say press freedom should <em>always<\/em> <em>be protected<\/em> include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Men:<\/strong> 53% of men say this, compared with 40% of women.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>White Americans:<\/strong> Half of White adults say press freedom should always be protected; 35% of Black adults say the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>College graduates:<\/strong> U.S. adults with at least a bachelor\u2019s degree (53%) are more likely than those with a high school diploma or less (38%) to say press freedom should always be protected, even if it means false information can be published.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Republicans: <\/strong>57% of Republicans say this, compared with 38% of Democrats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These partisan differences align with a <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/07\/20\/most-americans-favor-restrictions-on-false-information-violent-content-online\/\">previous Center study<\/a> that found that Democrats are much more likely than Republicans to support interventions by the U.S. government or technology companies in moderating false information online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
