But whatever yesterday\u2019s votes portend, polls have been showing a decline in Tea Party support among Republicans since their peak of influence in 2010.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/legacy-questionnaires\/4-28-14%20Russia-Ukraine%20Topline%20for%20Release.pdf\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f4f3f2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f4f3f2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"430\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/05\/FT_14.05.21_TeaPartyDecline.png?resize=420,430 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-26481 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/05\/FT_14.05.21_TeaPartyDecline.png\" alt=\"GOP's views of Tea Party\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In asking Republicans whether they agree or disagree with the Tea Party, Pew Research surveys found that agreement has fallen from 48% in March 2010 to 33% in <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/legacy-questionnaires\/4-28-14%20Russia-Ukraine%20Topline%20for%20Release.pdf\">our most recent poll<\/a> conducted in late April this year.\u00a0At one point agreement with the Tea Party dipped to 28% in May 2013, during the long budget standoff between congressional Republican leaders and the White House.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This decline continued a trend noted in several surveys that asked the question a different way: whether Republicans had a favorable or unfavorable view of the movement. Republicans with a favorable view declined from a peak of 64% in August 2011 to 53% last fall, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2013\/10\/16\/tea-partys-image-turns-more-negative\/\">our October 2013 poll<\/a>.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2013\/10\/16\/tea-partys-image-turns-more-negative\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f2f1ef\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f2f1ef;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"336\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/05\/FT_14.05.21_TeaPartyDecline_2.png?resize=420,336 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-26486 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/05\/FT_14.05.21_TeaPartyDecline_2.png\" alt=\"GOP views of Tea Party\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sharpest falloff during that period came among moderate and liberal Republicans. Just 27% of moderates and liberals expressed a favorable view, down 19 points from the previous June. The Tea Party\u2019s ratings declined even among conservatives, from 74% favorable in June of that year to 65% in October.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other recent polls show\u00a0a similar trend.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tea-party-support-hits-new-lows-poll\/\">CBS News survey<\/a> conducted May 16-19 found that 32% of Republicans consider themselves to be Tea Party supporters, down 10 points since February and 23 points since July 2010.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, Gallup reported that the share of Republicans and Republican leaners who called themselves Tea Party supporters had dropped from 61% in November 2010 to 41% today, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/168917\/four-years-gop-support-tea-party-down.aspx\">a survey conducted in late April<\/a>.
