You\u2019re more likely to find it in the Midwest"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-260007\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/06\/FT_14.06.04_NewHousesbyRegion.png\" alt=\"FT_14.06.04_NewHousesbyRegion\" width=\"420\" height=\"800\"><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Census Bureau&#8217;s recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/construction\/chars\/pdf\/c25ann2013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report on characteristics of newly built housing<\/a> reveals lots of interesting regional variations, beyond the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2014\/6\/3\/5773174\/the-american-love-affair-with-building-more-bathrooms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">widely reported<\/a>\u00a0fact that median square footage of single-family homes has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/wp\/2014\/06\/02\/the-housing-crash-did-nothing-to-tamp-our-appetite-for-enormous-houses\/?wpisrc=nl_wonk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resumed its pre-housing crash climb<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one, housing hasn&#8217;t grown evenly in all regions of the country. New homes are largest in the South, where the median floor area last year was 2,469 square feet; they&#8217;re smallest in the Midwest, at a median 2,177 square feet. (The median for the whole country is 2,384 square feet.) But over the past four decades, home size has grown the most in the Northeast: The median floor area of a new home there was 61% above the corresponding median in 1973.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, according to the Census data, fully a third of all newly completed houses in the South were 3,000 square feet or more; in 1999, which is as far back as the report goes, just 18% of new Southern homes were that big.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2014\/06\/FT_14.06.04_NewHousesbyRegion-2.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e9e8e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e9e8e3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"434\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/06\/FT_14.06.04_NewHousesbyRegion-2.png?resize=200,434 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-26566 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/06\/FT_14.06.04_NewHousesbyRegion-2.png\" alt=\"FT_14.06.04_NewHousesbyRegion-2\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re looking for a new home with four or more bedrooms, you&#8217;re most likely to find one in the West or the South: 48% and 47%, respectively, of single-family homes completed last year in those regions have at least four bedrooms. The South also leads in share of new homes with three or more bathrooms: 36% last year.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Midwesterners, by contrast, appear more interested in garage space than living space: 38% of new homes in that region have garages built for three or more cars, well above all other regions. (Perhaps they need the room for their snowblowers and other winter gear?)<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Homebuyers, or at least homebuilders, also show distinct regional preferences in 0utdoor amenities. Two-thirds of all new-in-2013 houses in the West and South have porches; nearly that many (63%) in the West have patios.
