According to a new <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2014\/04\/17\/us-views-of-technology-and-the-future\/\">Pew Research Center survey<\/a>\u00a0in partnership\u00a0with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonian.com\/scifipoll\">Smithsonian Magazine<\/a>, 59% of Americans think scientific and technological innovations over the next half-century will, overall, improve people&#8217;s lives. We recently asked Americans about their views on a variety of scientific developments, including some innovations that are already moving out of the lab and into the real world, such as Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2013\/11\/26\/national\/ministry-to-push-nursing-robots-to-aid-caregivers\/#.U0hg2vldXAk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">robotic attendants for the elderly<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/01\/09\/tech\/innovation\/self-driving-cars-ces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">self-driving cars<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also asked Americans how likely they thought five things were to happen by 2064. A Boston company, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harvardapparatusregen.com\/index.php\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvard Apparatus Regenerative Technology<\/a>, is building synthetic tracheas by growing a patient&#8217;s own stem cells on lab-made scaffolding in &#8220;bioreactors.&#8221;\u00a0HART says its proprietary technology &#8220;gives us substantial expertise and intellectual property for developing products addressing diseases impacting other organs like the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, heart valves, and heart.&#8221; Doris Taylor, director of regenerative medicine at the Texas Heart Institute, has built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.texasheart.org\/Research\/RegenerativeMedicine\/faq_keywords.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;bioartificial&#8221; hearts<\/a> from rat tissues, and is testing the approach with other organs. She expects it will be at least a decade before such hearts would be ready for clinical tryouts, but simpler tissues such as blood vessels and cardiac valves could be in use sooner. However, Simon Colton, a British computer scientist, has developed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepaintingfool.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Painting Fool<\/a>, software he says generates its own artwork and can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/blogs\/nstv\/2012\/01\/painting-computer-surprises-viewers-with-its-artwork.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digitally &#8220;paint&#8221;<\/a> in several styles. Programmers at the University of Malaga in Spain have created <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/computer-creates-piece-orchestral-music-just-8-minutes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iamus<\/a>, described as &#8220;the first computer-composer that doesn&#8217;t require any human intervention&#8221; (you can listen to one of its compositions, for harpsichord and viola d&#8217;amore, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Uq3iKbCNDCM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>). But while computers might do well at writing sample<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/latest-news\/media-lab\/244113\/robot-to-write-1-million-stories-in-2014-but-will-you-know-it-when-you-see-it\/\"> business news<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2010\/11\/12\/automated-news-sports-statsheet\/\">sports stories<\/a>, the prospects for artful novels are not too promising yet. While scientists have been able to &#8220;teleport&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/physicsworld.com\/cws\/article\/news\/2013\/jun\/11\/quantum-teleportation-done-between-distant-large-objects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">individual atoms<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; essentially transferring quantum information from one atom onto another &#8212; that line of research is more likely to lead to quantum computing than to &#8220;Star Trek&#8221;-style transporters. In the past,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mars.jpl.nasa.gov\/programmissions\/missions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/exploration.esa.int\/mars\/44995-mars-sample-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">European Space Agency<\/a> talked about sending manned missions to Mars by the 2030s, but now they are only discussing nearer-term unmanned missions. One private group, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inspirationmars.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inspiration Mars Foundation<\/a>, wants to send a two-person crew on a Mars flyby in 2018. Another, a Dutch nonprofit organization called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mars-one.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mars One<\/a>, aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars, starting with a 2025 landing. Last year, more than 200,000 people from around the world applied for one of four one-way tickets on the first Mars One mission; 1,058 candidates have made it to the second round of the multi-part selection process. But weather, unlike climate, is a near-term phenomenon.
