Trevi\u00f1o Morales is wanted in Mexico and the United States for charges of drug trafficking, murder, torture, kidnapping and extortion, among other crimes. Mexican armed forces made the arrest early Monday morning after a prolonged investigation, helped in part by U.S. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/world\/worldnow\/la-fg-wn-zetas-leader-in-mexico-jail-20130716,0,2324685.story\">intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a Pew Research Center poll conducted in March, the Mexican public <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2013\/04\/29\/u-s-image-rebounds-in-mexico\/\">broadly supports<\/a> using such tactics for pursuing drug traffickers. More than eight-in-ten favor employing the Mexican army to fight the drug cartels. Just 13% oppose.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2013\/07\/FT_mexicans-us-troops.png\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ededed\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ededed;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"285\" height=\"175\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2013\/07\/FT_mexicans-us-troops.png?resize=285,175 285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-27789 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2013\/07\/FT_mexicans-us-troops.png\" alt=\"FT_mexicans-us-troops\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, Mexicans welcome U.S. help through the training of police and military (74% support) or by providing money and weapons (55%). A majority (59%) opposes, however, the deployment of U.S. troops within their country to assist in the fight.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arrest of Trevi\u00f1o Morales is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2013\/jul\/16\/mexico-arrests-zetas-cartel-leader\">first major blow<\/a> against the drug cartels under new president Enrique Pe\u00f1a Nieto\u2019s administration. During his campaign for office, Pe\u00f1a Nieto promised to make significant progress in the fight against drug traffickers. In the March survey conducted before Trevi\u00f1o Morales\u2019s arrest, just 47% of the Mexican public approved of Pe\u00f1a Nieto\u2019s handling of organized crime and drug trafficking, while 45% disapproved. But whether the big arrest will reduce drug-related violence \u2013 or improve Pe\u00f1a Nieto\u2019s approval rating \u2013 is still too early to tell.
