More than half of White Christians think Trump was a \u201cgreat\u201d or \u201cgood\u201d president and <em>don\u2019t<\/em> think he broke the law in an effort to change the outcome of the 2020 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In stark contrast, most registered voters who are Black Protestants or religious \u201cnones\u201d \u2013 those who self-identify as atheists, agnostics or \u201cnothing in particular\u201d \u2013 would vote for Biden over Trump. For this analysis, we surveyed 8,709 adults \u2013 including 7,166 registered voters \u2013 from April 8 to 14, 2024. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. Trump draws support from: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>81% of White evangelical Protestant voters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">61% of White Catholics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>57% of White Protestants who are <em>not <\/em>evangelical<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, 77% of Black Protestant voters say they would vote for Biden over Trump. Most religious \u201cnones\u201d also say this, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>87% of atheist voters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">82% of agnostics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>57% of those whose religion is \u201cnothing in particular\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These presidential preferences reflect the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/04\/09\/party-identification-among-religious-groups-and-religiously-unaffiliated-voters\/\">partisan leanings of U.S. religious groups<\/a>. White Christians have been trending in a Republican direction for quite some time, while Black Protestants and religious \u201cnones\u201d have long been strongly Democratic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Center\u2019s new survey includes responses from Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and people from many other religious backgrounds, as well as adherents of smaller Christian groups like Hispanic Protestants and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (widely known as Mormons). Overall, 62% of Christian voters who say they go to church at least once or twice a month support Trump over Biden. Among Christians who go to church less often, 55% would vote for Trump if the election were today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among White evangelical Protestant voters, 84% of regular churchgoers say they would vote for Trump, compared with 77% of White evangelicals who don\u2019t go to church regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White nonevangelical Protestants are the only Christian group in which support for Trump is significantly stronger among nonattenders than among regular churchgoers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"voters-views-of-biden-and-trump-as-presidents\">Voters\u2019 views of Biden and Trump as presidents<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About three-quarters of White evangelical Protestant voters say Trump was a \u201cgreat\u201d (37%) or \u201cgood\u201d (37%) president. Roughly half of White Catholics and White nonevangelical Protestants share this view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to Biden, atheists and Black Protestants rate the current president\u2019s performance most favorably. Roughly half of voters in each of these groups say Biden is a great or good president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, Trump gets higher marks on these questions than Biden.
