The survey was conducted on the Center\u2019s nationally representative American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. And it\u2019s nearly twice as high as four years ago, when 13% of Americans expressed unfavorable opinions of both Biden and Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(The 2024 Center survey was conducted before <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-trial-deliberations-jury-testimony-verdict-85558c6d08efb434d05b694364470aa0\">Trump\u2019s conviction on 34 criminal counts<\/a> in the New York \u201chush money\u201d case on May 30.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The previous high point for negative views of both presidential candidates was in 2016.<\/strong> At about this point in the 2016 campaign, 20% of Americans expressed unfavorable opinions about both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=171627\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e2dcdb\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"840\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.13_historical-favorability_2.png?resize=480,650 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.13_historical-favorability_2.png?resize=620,840 620w\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.13_historical-favorability_2.png?w=620\" alt=\"A pie chart showing that 1 in 4 Americans have an unfavorable view of both Biden and Trump.\" class=\"wp-image-171627 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e2dcdb; width:310px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to 2016, no more than about one-in-ten Americans had held unfavorable opinions of both major party candidates at this stage of any of the seven previous presidential campaigns. And during several campaigns \u2013 most recently George W. Bush versus John Kerry in 2004 \u2013 no more than about 5% did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the current campaign:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Slightly more than a third of Americans (36%) have a favorable view of Trump and an unfavorable opinion of Biden.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nearly as many (34%) have a favorable view of Biden and a negative one of Trump.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25% have unfavorable views of both candidates, while just 3% feel favorably toward both.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans\u2019 opinions of Biden and Trump are <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/03\/19\/about-1-in-4-americans-have-unfavorable-views-of-both-biden-and-trump\/\">largely unchanged since March<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"favorability-of-major-party-presidential-candidates-1988-2024\">Favorability of major party presidential candidates, 1988-2024<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the 2024 survey, 39% of Americans view Trump favorably, while 37% have a positive opinion of Biden. Trump\u2019s ratings are roughly the same as they were at about the same point in 2016 (37% favorable) but lower than in 2020 (42%). In 2004 and earlier, <em>both<\/em> candidates had ratings of at least 50%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three candidates during this period had favorable ratings at or above 60%: Michael Dukakis in 1988, Bill Clinton in 1996 and George W. Bush in 2000. Clinton\u2019s and Bush\u2019s ratings remained at about that level for the remainder of the campaign, while ratings for Dukakis declined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"increasing-partisanship-in-views-of-presidential-candidates\">Increasing partisanship in views of presidential candidates<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=171629\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f4f3f3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.13_historical-favorability_4.png?resize=480,782 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.13_historical-favorability_4.png?resize=782,1274 782w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.13_historical-favorability_4.png?resize=840,1368 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"1042\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.13_historical-favorability_4.png?w=640\" alt=\"A dot plot showing that, in both parties, views of the opposing party\u2019s candidate have grown less favorable over time.\" class=\"wp-image-171629 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f4f3f3; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increasing negative partisanship is a major factor behind the decline in favorability of major party candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that regard, the pattern is similar to the growing partisanship in <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/10\/20\/bidens-job-rating-is-similar-to-trumps-but-lower-than-that-of-other-recent-presidents\/\">presidential job approval ratings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Favorability ratings for candidates have become considerably more negative among members of the opposing party than they were a few decades ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just 8% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents have a favorable opinion of Trump. A similar share of Republicans and Republican leaners (6%) feel positively toward Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, as recently as 2008, 27% of Democrats viewed Republican candidate John McCain favorably while an identical share of Republicans had a favorable opinion of Democratic candidate Barack Obama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"favorability-of-leaders-in-both-parties\">Favorability of leaders in both parties<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=171630\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ece9e1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"956\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.13_historical-favorability_5.png?resize=480,740 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.13_historical-favorability_5.png?resize=620,956 620w\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/06\/SR_24.06.13_historical-favorability_5.png?w=620\" alt=\"A diverging bar chart showing low favorability ratings for Biden, Trump, Harris, congressional leaders.\" class=\"wp-image-171630 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ece9e1; width:310px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/07\/21\/little-change-in-americans-views-of-trump-over-the-past-year\/\">Americans\u2019 negative evaluations of political leaders also extend to <\/a>the leadership of both chambers of Congress and the vice president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six-in-ten hold unfavorable views of Vice President Kamala Harris, while 36% rate her favorably. Another 3% say they have not heard of her. These ratings are essentially unchanged since July 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans are much more likely not to have heard of Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (37%) or Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (25%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, those who have heard of them view both congressional leaders more unfavorably than favorably. Schumer\u2019s rating is largely unchanged in recent years.
