And the share who say they are uncertain whether the government should ban the platform has risen from 28% in March 2023 to 39% now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These findings come as TikTok\u2019s fate in the United States continues to be uncertain. For this analysis, we surveyed 10,658 adults from July 15 to Aug. 4, 2024. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Surveys were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. In March 2023, 60% of Republicans and 43% of Democrats said they supported the government banning TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partisan differences that persist today are also present in other questions we\u2019ve asked about TikTok. As was true in previous surveys, attitudes vary dramatically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>TikTok users<\/strong> are far more likely to oppose (61%) than support (10%) a ban, with 29% unsure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Those who don\u2019t use TikTok<\/strong> are about as likely to support a ban (42%) as to be uncertain (43%), while 15% are opposed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Support for a ban has decreased within both groups between March 2023 and now. Among U.S. adults who don\u2019t use TikTok, support has fallen sharply, from 60% in March 2023 to 42%. And among users, it\u2019s fallen from 19% to 10% over that period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, those who don\u2019t use TikTok have become more uncertain about a ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"do-americans-think-a-tiktok-ban-will-happen\">Do Americans think a TikTok ban will happen?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, we measured public views on the likelihood of TikTok getting banned in the U.S. Americans are more likely to believe this will <em>not<\/em> happen than to think it will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=186297\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e2e5e1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_24.09.05_tiktok-ban_4.png?resize=480,437 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_24.09.05_tiktok-ban_4.png?resize=782,711 782w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_24.09.05_tiktok-ban_4.png?resize=840,764 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"582\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/SR_24.09.05_tiktok-ban_4.png?w=640\" alt=\"A diverging bar chart showing that half of Americans doubt TikTok will be banned in the U.S.; Republicans, Democrats are similarly skeptical.\" class=\"wp-image-186297 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e2e5e1; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Half of Americans think it\u2019s very or somewhat <em>unlikely<\/em> that TikTok will be banned in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, 31% say a ban is at least somewhat likely, including 6% who believe it is very likely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another 19% say they are unsure whether TikTok will be banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Views by political party<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even as Republicans are more likely to support a ban, they\u2019re just as likely as Democrats to doubt it will happen. About half of adults in each party say a ban is very or somewhat unlikely, while roughly three-in-ten say it\u2019s very or somewhat likely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Views by use of TikTok<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are only modest differences based on whether people use the platform. While 54% of U.S. adult TikTok users say it\u2019s unlikely that the platform will be banned, 48% of nonusers say the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Views by attitudes toward a ban<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar shares of Americans who support and who oppose a ban think it is unlikely to happen.
