And in Minnesota, a woman will ascend to the governorship for the first time if current Gov. This fall, Senate races in Delaware, Indiana, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Utah each feature a woman nominee who could become the state\u2019s first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three of these candidates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/10\/05\/lisa-blunt-rochester-black-woman-senate\/\">Lisa Blunt Rochester<\/a> of Delaware, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaa.org\/local-news\/2024-05-07\/valerie-mccray-wins-democratic-u-s-senate-primary-making-indiana-history\">Valerie McCray<\/a> of Indiana and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2024\/08\/27\/caroline-gleich-running-to-replace-mitt-romney-utah-senate\/\">Caroline Gleich<\/a> of Utah) are Democrats, and two (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/heinrich-battles-domenici-hold-onto-233400342.html\">Nella Domenici<\/a> of New Mexico and <a href=\"https:\/\/rhodeislandcurrent.com\/2024\/09\/24\/name-recognition-remains-a-challenge-for-morgans-u-s-senate-bid\/\">Patricia Morgan<\/a> of Rhode Island) are Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blunt Rochester and McCray would also be the first Black senators to represent their respective states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=191233\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f3f0e7\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/10\/SR_24.10.31_women-leaders_2.png?resize=480,512 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/10\/SR_24.10.31_women-leaders_2.png?resize=782,834 782w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/10\/SR_24.10.31_women-leaders_2.png?resize=840,896 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"683\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/10\/SR_24.10.31_women-leaders_2.png?w=640\" alt=\"A map showing that women have held governships in about two-thirds of states.\" class=\"wp-image-191233 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f3f0e7; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the 18 states that have never had a woman governor, two \u2013 Indiana and Missouri \u2013 have a woman on the ballot in this year\u2019s general election. <a href=\"https:\/\/indianacapitalchronicle.com\/2024\/10\/07\/democrat-jennifer-mccormick-runs-on-optimism-embracing-republican-past\/\">Jennifer McCormick<\/a> of Indiana and <a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/2024\/08\/06\/crystal-quade-captures-democratic-nomination-for-missouri-governor\/\">Crystal Quade<\/a> of Missouri are both Democratic nominees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in Minnesota, Lt. Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/08\/23\/nx-s1-5078569\/peggy-flanagan-minnesota-indigenous-walz-harris-trump-election\">Peggy Flanagan<\/a> will take over as governor if Walz is elected vice president. That would make her the first woman and the first Native American person to hold the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five states have not had a woman senator <em>or<\/em> a woman governor: Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women have served in numerous statewide <a href=\"https:\/\/cawpdata.rutgers.edu\/women-elected-officials\/position?current=2&amp;yearend_filter=All&amp;level%5B%5D=Statewide&amp;items_per_page=50\">executive and legislative offices<\/a> over the decades, including in all the states where they have not yet held Senate seats or governorships. And every state has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/11\/08\/1134352130\/vermont-balint-election-day-results-2022\">sent at least one woman<\/a> to either the U.S. House of Representatives or the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"women-in-the-118th-senate\">Women in the 118th Senate<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the current Congress, women hold 25 of 100 Senate seats \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/01\/03\/118th-congress-has-a-record-number-of-women\/\">a record high<\/a>. They represent a total of 21 states. In Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire and Washington, both senators are women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fourteen of the 25 current senators are the first women to represent their state in the Senate. Their tenures vary: Washington Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu\/directory\/patty-murray\/\">Patty Murray<\/a> has served in the Senate since 1993, whereas Wyoming Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyomingpublicmedia.org\/politics\/2020-11-03\/cynthia-lummis-becomes-first-woman-to-win-wyoming-senate-seat\">Cynthia Lummis<\/a> took office in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fifteen current women senators are Democrats, nine are Republicans and one (Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona) is an independent. Looking at the Senate as a whole, women make up a larger share of the Democratic caucus (31%) than the Republican caucus (18%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-century-in-the-senate\">A century in the Senate<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women have served in the Senate for over a century. In 1922, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiaencyclopedia.org\/articles\/history-archaeology\/rebecca-latimer-felton-1835-1930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rebecca Latimer Felton<\/a>, a suffragist from Georgia, became the first woman senator. About three-quarters (46) first took office after 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little over half (19) of the states that have ever been represented by a woman in the Senate have sent more than one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four women have represented California in the Senate, the most from any state. In addition to Harris, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/22\/us\/politics\/kamala-harris-senate.html\">represented the state<\/a> from 2017 to 2021, this group includes two long-serving senators. William Ross. <a href=\"https:\/\/texaspolitics.utexas.edu\/archive\/html\/exec\/governors\/15.html\">Miriam \u201cMa\u201d Ferguson<\/a> of Texas, the first woman ever chosen for the office in a general election, was sworn in just 15 days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women currently serve as governors in 12 states. Eight are Democrats and four are Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five of the current governors are the first women elected in their state: Democrats Janet Mills of Maine and Kathy Hochul of New York; and Republicans Kim Reynolds of Iowa, Kristi Noem of South Dakota and Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Arizona, five women have held the governorship since 1988 \u2013 by far the most from any state. In fact, three women served consecutively over a 17-year stretch, from Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/jane-hull-first-woman-elected-arizona-governor-dies-at-84\">Jane Hull\u2019s<\/a> ascension in 1997 until Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.org\/governor\/jan-brewer\/\">Jan Brewer<\/a> left office in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>CORRECTION (Nov. 1, 2024): This analysis has been updated to indicate that every state has been represented by a woman in either the U.S. House of Representatives or
