Key issues under discussion have been creating a path to citizenship, border security and shaping a guest worker program for low-skilled labor.<\/p>\n\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2013\/03\/28\/most-say-illegal-immigrants-should-be-allowed-to-stay-but-citizenship-is-more-divisive\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/03\/3-28-13-1.png\" width=\"297\" height=\"423\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A survey in March found that 71% of Americans say there should be a way for people in the United States illegally to remain in this country if they meet certain requirements, while 27% say they should not be allowed to stay legally.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is a division of views among the 71% who support finding a way for immigrants here illegally to stay.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly four-in-ten (43%) of the public says unauthorized immigrants should be allowed to apply for citizenship, but 24% of the public says they should only be allowed to apply for legal residency.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2011, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/hispanic\/2013\/02\/04\/ii-recent-trends-in-naturalization-2000-2011-2\/\">about 40 million immigrants<\/a> in the United States. Of that total, 11.1 million, or 28%, were in this country illegally.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Support for providing legal status for unauthorized immigrants cuts across party lines, with backing from 64% of Republicans, 76% of Democrats and 70% of independents.
