Ipsos recruited the teens via their parents, who were part of its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-us\/solutions\/public-affairs\/knowledgepanel\">KnowledgePanel<\/a>. The KnowledgePanel is a probability-based web panel recruited primarily through national, random sampling of residential addresses. The survey was weighted to be representative of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with their parents by age, gender, race and ethnicity, household income, and other categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/01\/SR_25.01.15_teens-chatgpt_topline.pdf\">questions used&nbsp;for this analysis<\/a>, along with responses, and&nbsp;its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/01\/SR_25.01.15_teens-chatgpt_methodology.pdf\">methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This research was reviewed and approved by an external institutional review board (IRB), Advarra, an independent committee of experts specializing in helping to protect the rights of research participants.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=197153\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d2dde4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"768\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/01\/SR_25.01.15_teens-chatgpt_1.png?resize=400,768 400w\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/01\/SR_25.01.15_teens-chatgpt_1.png?w=400\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that twice as many teens now say they use ChatGPT for schoolwork as in 2023.\" class=\"wp-image-197153 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d2dde4; width:200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The share of teens who say they use ChatGPT for their schoolwork has risen to 26%, according to a Pew Research Center survey of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17. That\u2019s up from 13% in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, most teens (73%) have not used the chatbot in this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teens\u2019 use of ChatGPT for schoolwork increased across demographic groups. But certain groups stand out for using the chatbot in this way:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"by-race-and-ethnicity\">By race and ethnicity<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black and Hispanic teens (31% each) are more likely than White teens (22%) to say they have used ChatGPT for their schoolwork. (There were not enough Asian teens in the sample to be broken out into a separate analysis.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"by-grade-level\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">By grade level<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teens in 11th and 12th grade (31%) are more likely than seventh and eighth graders (20%) to say they use ChatGPT for their schoolwork. Only 9% say it is not acceptable to use it for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far fewer support using the chatbot to do math or write essays:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>29% of teens say it\u2019s acceptable to use ChatGPT to solve math problems, while 28% say it\u2019s not acceptable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18% say it\u2019s acceptable to use ChatGPT to write essays, and 42% say it\u2019s not acceptable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another 15% to 21% of teens are unsure whether it\u2019s acceptable to use ChatGPT for these tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-familiar-are-teens-with-chatgpt\">How familiar are teens with ChatGPT?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/?attachment_id=197154\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e4e7ea\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"912\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/01\/SR_25.01.15_teens-chatgpt_4.png?resize=400,912 400w\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/01\/SR_25.01.15_teens-chatgpt_4.png?w=400\" alt=\"A stacked bar chart showing that 79% of teens have heard of ChatGPT, up from 2023.\" class=\"wp-image-197154 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e4e7ea; width:200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teens\u2019 awareness of ChatGPT has grown. Overall, 79% of teens say they have heard of this chatbot, up from 67% in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have also become more familiar with ChatGPT. The share who say they have heard <em>a lot<\/em> about it has risen from 23% in 2023 to 32% today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Teens who are most familiar with ChatGPT are more likely to use it for their schoolwork.<\/strong> Some 56% of teens who say they\u2019ve heard a lot about it report using it for schoolwork. This share drops to 18% among those who\u2019ve only heard a little about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Teens who are most familiar with the chatbot are also more likely to say using it for schoolwork is OK.<\/strong> For instance, 79% of those who have heard a lot about ChatGPT say it\u2019s acceptable to use for researching new topics. The shares who say this include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>84% of teens in households with incomes of $75,000 or more say they\u2019ve heard at least a little about ChatGPT.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>69% of those in households with incomes between $30,000 and $75,000 say they\u2019ve heard of it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>67% of those in households with incomes below $30,000 say the same.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, teens in the lowest-income households grew the most in their awareness of ChatGPT over the past year. While 41% said they had heard of the chatbot in 2023, 67% say so now \u2013 an increase of 26 percentage points. By comparison, awareness of ChatGPT increased by 11 points among teens in households with incomes between $30,000 and $75,000 and 9 points among teens in households with incomes of $75,000 or
