Obama, whose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/news\/politics-government\/white-house\/article27496417.html\">father was Kenyan<\/a>, is very popular in both countries, as well as in many other nations in sub-Saharan Africa. Obama\u2019s predecessor, George W. Moreover, a median of 56% said it was good that American ideas and customs were spreading to their country \u2013 a higher percentage than in the other regions where we asked this question in 2012 and 2013.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2013\/07\/18\/chapter-1-attitudes-toward-the-united-states\/#u-s-economic-aid\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-272056\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dedcc5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dedcc5;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"370\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/07\/FT_15.07.23_USafricaEconAid.png?resize=420,370 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" class=\"wp-image-29955 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2015\/07\/FT_15.07.23_USafricaEconAid.png\" alt=\"U.S. Economic Aid Viewed Positively in Africa\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pepfar.gov\/\">President\u2019s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief<\/a> (PEPFAR) and other programs, the U.S. provides assistance to many African nations, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2013\/07\/18\/chapter-1-attitudes-toward-the-united-states\/#u-s-economic-aid\">2013 Pew Research poll<\/a> found <strong>a widespread belief that U.S. economic aid is having a positive impact<\/strong>. More than half in all six nations surveyed said American aid was having a beneficial effect on their country. Outside of sub-Saharan Africa, U.S. assistance is not always viewed so positively: The same question was asked in Egypt and Pakistan, where only 24% and 8%, respectively, saw American aid in a favorable light.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\">While views of the U.S. are mostly positive in the region, <strong>it is<\/strong> <strong>not the only major power with a strong image. China also receives favorable reviews in Africa.<\/strong> Across the nine African nations we <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2015\/06\/23\/2-views-of-china-and-the-global-balance-of-power\/#china-receives-generally-positive-ratings-from-global-publics\">polled in 2015<\/a>, a median of 70% express a positive opinion of China, which has invested heavily in the region in recent years.
