Pew Research Center has conducted more than a <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2024\/04\/12\/majority-of-u-s-catholics-express-favorable-view-of-pope-francis\/\">dozen surveys<\/a> about Francis since his papacy began in 2013. The U.S. data is based on 15 surveys conducted since Francis\u2019 papacy began in 2013. Here are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/SR_25.02.25_pope-francis_questionnaire.pdf\">questions used for the 2025 U.S. survey<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/SR_25.02.25_pope-francis_topline.pdf\">topline<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/02\/SR_25.02.25_pope-francis_methodology.pdf\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"favorability-ratings\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Favorability ratings<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Francis has been broadly popular among U.S. Catholics throughout his tenure. At least 80% of Catholics have expressed a favorable opinion of him in 10 of the 15 U.S. surveys in which we have asked about the pope since 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His highest favorability rating was 90% in February 2015. Benedict\u2019s favorability ratings ranged between 67% and 83% during his pontificate. In our most recent polling from earlier this month, 88% of U.S. Catholics who are Democrats or lean toward the Democratic Party express a positive view of him, compared with 69% among Republicans and Republican leaners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our latest data, Catholics\u2019 views of Francis do not differ significantly by gender, race or ethnicity, age, or frequency of mass attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, roughly identical shares of Catholic men (79%) and Catholic women (77%) express favorable views of Francis. In our <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2024\/04\/12\/majority-of-u-s-catholics-express-favorable-view-of-pope-francis\/\">February 2024 survey<\/a>, about seven-in-ten said the pope represents a change in direction for the church, including 42% who said he represents a&nbsp;major&nbsp;change and 30% who said he represents a minor change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catholics who view Francis <em>unfavorably<\/em> were especially likely to say he represents a major change for the church. Among those with an unfavorable view of the pope, 54% said in February 2024 that he represented a major change in direction. A smaller share of those who view Francis favorably said this (41%). &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"views-of-francis-in-latin-america\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Views of Francis in Latin America<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve also surveyed Catholics in Latin American countries about the pope on two occasions: first <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2014\/11\/13\/religion-in-latin-america\/\">in 2013-14<\/a> (near the start of his papacy) and <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/religion\/2024\/09\/26\/many-catholics-in-the-us-and-latin-america-want-the-church-to-allow-birth-control-and-to-let-women-become-priests\/\">again in 2024<\/a>.
