Just 10% of Americans say they rarely or never come across inaccurate news, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, <strong>Americans are split over how easy it is to distinguish truth from fiction when getting news.<\/strong> About half (51%) say they generally find it difficult to determine what\u2019s true and what\u2019s not when they get news, while a similar share (49%) find it easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center conducted this analysis as part of our ongoing exploration of perceived accuracy of and <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/10\/29\/how-americans-trust-in-information-from-news-organizations-and-social-media-sites-has-changed-over-time\/\">trust in information<\/a> in the evolving news environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand Americans\u2019 experience with news accuracy, we surveyed 5,153 U.S. adults from Aug. 18 to 24, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of people recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses who have agreed to take surveys regularly. This kind of recruitment gives nearly all U.S. adults a chance of selection. Interviews were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other factors.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">Read more about the ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/SR_25.10.29_info-quality_questionnaire.pdf\">questions used for this analysis<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/SR_25.10.29_info-quality_topline.pdf\">topline<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2025\/09\/25\/news-information-fact-sheets-methodology\/\">methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a strong connection between how often Americans say they come across inaccurate news and how difficult they think it is to determine what is true. Those who report <em>often<\/em> encountering inaccurate news are more likely than those who <em>rarely or never<\/em> do to say it\u2019s hard to know what is true (59% vs. 31%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spread of false information online has become <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2025\/08\/19\/false-information-online-as-a-threat\/\">a top concern for Americans<\/a>, as well as people in many other countries. A large majority of U.S. adults now <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/news-platform-fact-sheet\/#news-consumption-across-all-platforms\">get news digitally<\/a>, but <strong>nondigital news consumers are less likely to say they frequently encounter inaccurate news.<\/strong> Among adults who don\u2019t use the internet or never get news from a smartphone, computer or tablet, 26% say they come across news that they think is inaccurate extremely often or often. This compares with 43% among those who do get news from digital devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" By comparison, around four-in-ten moderate or liberal Republicans and Democrats across the ideological spectrum say they come across inaccurate news extremely often or often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to distinguishing fact from fiction in the news, more Republicans than Democrats say they find it difficult to determine what\u2019s true and what\u2019s not (56% vs. 45%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most liberal Democrats (63%) say it\u2019s <em>easy<\/em> to tell what is and isn\u2019t true, compared with 49% of conservative or moderate
