The microdata files used for this analysis come from the U.S. Census Bureau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/10\/SR_25.11.3_dinks_methodology.pdf\">methodology<\/a> for more information on the dataset, the variables we used and how we calculated specific statistics.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DINKs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/money\/money\/dinks-tiktok-trend-rcna148408\">have gained attention in recent years<\/a> as videos showcasing their lifestyle have gone viral on social media. But there\u2019s no official definition of who\u2019s included in this group. This analysis defines DINKs as married couples in which at least one spouse is 30 to 49 years old and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both spouses work and earn an income<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Neither spouse has ever had any children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We chose this age range to capture couples who are older than the average age at first birth for women, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/05\/07\/birth-rate-states\">27.5 in 2023<\/a>. We also chose to focus on married couples because they are more likely than cohabiting couples to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/it-s-man-s-and-woman-s-world\/201505\/can-money-create-inequality-in-your-relationship#:~:text=In%20general%2C%20married%20couples%20are%20more%20likely%20to%20pool%20their%20income%20than%20are%20cohabiters%3B\">pool their finances<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other analyses of DINKs might use a different age range or focus on cohabiting couples in addition to married couples. It\u2019s also important to note that some couples who are defined as DINKs in this analysis still may have children in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remainder of this analysis examines how DINKs compare with dual-income couples with kids, based on available federal data. It is part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/family-relationships\/\">broader research into how the American family is changing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2024\/07\/25\/the-experiences-of-u-s-adults-who-dont-have-children\/\"><em>The Experiences of U.S. Adults Who Don\u2019t Have Children<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-do-dinks-compare-with-dual-income-couples-with-kids\">How do DINKs compare with dual-income couples with kids?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DINKs tend to be younger than dual-income couples with kids:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The median age of the older spouse in DINK couples is 36 as of 2023. By comparison, among dual-income couples <em>with<\/em> kids, the median age of the older spouse is 43.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DINKs are also more likely than dual-income couples with kids to be college graduates and to work full time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 58% of DINK couples, both spouses have at least a bachelor\u2019s degree. The corresponding figure among dual-income couples with kids is 43%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 81% of DINK couples, both spouses are employed full time. One important reason is that DINKs are less likely to own a home \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/2023\/12\/04\/the-assets-households-own-and-the-debts-they-carry\/#the-importance-of-home-equity:~:text=ethnic%20groups%20studied.-,The%20importance%20of%20home%20equity,-Home%20equity%20looms\">primary source of wealth for many Americans<\/a>. Some 71% of DINKs own a home, compared with 79% of dual-income couples with kids. And among homeowners, DINKs have less home equity than dual-income couples with kids ($165,000 vs. $222,000 as of 2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Age also plays a role when it comes to wealth: <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/social-trends\/2011\/11\/07\/chapter-1-wealth-gaps-by-age\/\">People tend to accumulate more wealth as they grow older<\/a>.
