Everyone who took part in the survey is a member of the Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">American Trends Panel<\/a>. (Gender differences in knowledge assessments have appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/40213339?seq=1\">academic literature<\/a> and past Center surveys, such as the one we conducted <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2022\/05\/25\/what-do-americans-know-about-international-affairs\/#international-knowledge-varies-markedly-across-demographic-groups\">on international affairs<\/a>. These differences might be driven by the fact that men are more likely than women to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/politics-and-gender\/article\/abs\/explaining-the-gender-gap-in-political-knowledge\/4F5165096D48CD8C575217675342F0F9\">guess on knowledge questions<\/a>, as opposed to reporting they\u2019re unsure.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\"><strong>Education:<\/strong> Americans with at least a bachelor\u2019s degree tend to get more questions correct than those with less education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\"><strong>Age:<\/strong> Americans ages 50 and older tend to score higher than younger adults.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There is no significant difference by political party.<\/strong> On average, Republicans and Republican-leaning independents answered 2.6 questions correctly, compared with 2.7 among Democrats and Democratic leaners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"does-public-opinion-about-nato-vary-based-on-nato-knowledge\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does public opinion about NATO vary based on NATO knowledge?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, public opinion <em>about<\/em> NATO tends to be more positive among those who <em>know more<\/em> about the alliance. Adults who answered four or five of these knowledge questions correctly are more likely to have a favorable view of NATO than those who answered none or one of the questions correctly (63% vs. 47%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Americans with more knowledge of NATO are also more likely than those with less knowledge to say the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2026\/04\/06\/republicans-have-become-less-likely-to-say-nato-membership-benefits-the-us\/\">benefits from being a member<\/a> of the alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"how-has-americans-nato-knowledge-changed-over-time\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How has Americans\u2019 NATO knowledge changed over time?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked three of these same NATO knowledge questions in a <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2024\/05\/08\/americans-opinions-of-nato\/#americans-knowledge-of-nato\">2024 survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, there has been no major change in the share of U.S. adults who correctly say NATO draws its membership from Europe and North America (57% know the answer today, versus 56% in 2024).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there have been slight increases in the share of Americans who know that Ukraine is not a member of NATO (45% vs. 41%) and the share who know that NATO\u2019s central focus is to promote the security of its members (55% vs. 51%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/05\/pg_2026.05.27_nato-knowledge_questionnaire.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/05\/pg_2026.05.27_nato-knowledge_questionnaire.pdf\">survey questions used<\/a> for this analysis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/05\/pg_2026.05.27_nato-knowledge_topline.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/05\/pg_2026.05.27_nato-knowledge_topline.pdf\">detailed responses<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/04\/SR_26.04.06_nato_methodology.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/04\/SR_26.04.06_nato_methodology.pdf\">survey methodology<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Test your NATO knowledge and see how you compare to U.S. adults.
