The survey was conducted May 26-June 1, 2026. In April, Leo <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pope-leo-usisraeli-war-iran-7309c5df6c7312b942e0510ea65502cb\">spoke out against war<\/a> and blamed it on unnamed leaders having a \u201cdelusion of omnipotence.\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-pope-leo-xiv-02f6b4554ea4b83af02af15987ae1f2d\">criticized Leo on social media<\/a>, saying the pope was \u201cWEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked about Pope Leo\u2019s approach to the Trump administration, U.S. Catholics are split. While 19% say Leo has been too critical of the Trump administration, 16% say he hasn\u2019t been critical enough. But Catholic Democrats and independents who lean toward the Democratic Party express somewhat more favorable views of Leo than Catholic Republicans and Republican leaners do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We found a <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/25\/pope-francis-and-public-opinion-key-findings-from-our-surveys\/\">similar pattern<\/a> during the latter years of Francis\u2019 pontificate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(In recent years, Catholics have been relatively evenly divided between the two parties. In the new survey, 51% of Catholic respondents identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party, while 45% identify with or lean toward the GOP.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new survey also shows that far more Catholic Democrats say Trump has been too critical of Pope Leo than say Leo has been too critical of Trump (70% vs. 3%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catholic Republicans are more divided. About a third (32%) say Trump has been too critical of Pope Leo.
