Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. Of the 20 policy goals we asked about, no other issue stands out \u2013 as has been the case <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2023\/02\/06\/economy-remains-the-publics-top-policy-priority-covid-19-concerns-decline-again\/\">for the past two years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This assessment comes amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/economy-inflation-why-americans-are-so-unhappy-three-charts\/\">ongoing worries about high prices<\/a>. Majorities of U.S. adults <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/01\/25\/views-of-the-nations-economy\/#cost-of-goods-housing-remain-top-economic-concerns\">say they are very concerned<\/a> about the price of food and consumer goods (72%) and the cost of housing (64%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, views of the economy overall have warmed a bit in the past year. Slightly more than a quarter of Americans (28%) rate U.S. economic conditions as excellent or good, an increase of 9 percentage points since last April. This shift is driven largely by Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents: 44% rate the economy positively, compared with just 13% of Republicans and GOP leaners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these sharply different assessments, majorities of both Democrats (63%) and Republicans (84%) say strengthening the economy should be a top policy goal this year. By comparison, the 39% of Democrats who cite immigration as a priority has remained fairly stable since 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Related:<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/race-ethnicity\/2024\/03\/04\/latinos-views-on-the-migrant-situation-at-the-us-mexico-border\/\"><em> Latinos\u2019 Views on the Migrant Situation at the U.S.-Mexico Border<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/02\/15\/migrant-encounters-at-the-us-mexico-border-hit-a-record-high-at-the-end-of-2023\/\">growing number of migrant encounters<\/a> at the southern border has emerged as a key issue in the 2024 election cycle. Biden and former President Donald Trump, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/biden-trump-texas-southern-border-events\/\">both visited the border on Feb. 29<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight-in-ten U.S. adults say the federal government is doing a bad job dealing with the large number of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, including 45% who say it\u2019s doing a <em>very<\/em> bad job, <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/02\/15\/how-americans-view-the-situation-at-the-u-s-mexico-border-its-causes-and-consequences\/\">according to our January survey<\/a>. Republicans and Democrats alike fault the federal government for its handling of the border situation \u2013 89% and 73%, respectively, say it\u2019s doing a bad job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey also asked Americans to <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/02\/15\/what-would-improve-the-u-s-immigration-system\/\">react to nine potential policies<\/a> that could address the situation at the border, and found broadly positive views of several. But Republicans place more emphasis on these issues than Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans\u2019 concerns about terrorism have risen 11 points since last year \u2013 76% now say it should be a top policy priority, up from 65% then. By comparison, about half of Democrats (51%) say defending against terrorism should be a priority this year, while 55% said this last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concerns about crime have risen somewhat in both parties since the start of Biden\u2019s presidency. About seven-in-ten Republicans (68%) say reducing crime should be a top priority this year, up 13 points since 2021. But Democrats are more likely than Republicans to describe the war in Ukraine this way (81% vs. 69%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/12\/08\/about-half-of-republicans-now-say-the-us-is-providing-too-much-aid-to-ukraine\/\">a late 2023 survey<\/a>, 48% of Republicans said the U.S. was giving too much support to Ukraine, while just 16% of Democrats said the same. In fact, addressing climate change ranks last on Republicans\u2019 list of priorities this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Views of the Biden administration\u2019s current climate policies also differ sharply by party. Eight-in-ten Democrats say the federal government is doing <em>too little<\/em> to reduce the effects of climate change, compared with 29% of Republicans, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2023\/06\/28\/3-majorities-of-americans-say-too-little-is-being-done-on-key-areas-of-environmental-protection\/\">a Center survey from spring 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, a majority of U.S. adults (67%) support <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2023\/06\/28\/majorities-of-americans-prioritize-renewable-energy-back-steps-to-address-climate-change\/\">prioritizing the development of renewable energy<\/a>, such as wind and solar, over expanding the production of oil, coal and natural gas. But Democrats are far more likely than Republicans to prefer this (90% vs. 42%).
