Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Compared with White Christians, however, smaller shares of Black Protestants and religiously unaffiliated adults say the situation at the border is a crisis.<br><br>The survey did not include enough responses from Hispanic Catholics and subgroups of religiously unaffiliated Americans to allow for separate analysis of whether they see the border situation as a crisis or not. However, other questions in the survey \u2013 which are examined in further detail below \u2013 <em>do<\/em> allow for separate analysis from these groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/08\/08\/why-pew-research-center-typically-cant-report-the-views-of-smaller-u-s-religious-groups\/\">did not have large enough samples<\/a> of smaller religious groups, such as Jews and Muslims, to show their responses for any of the questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-s-causing-the-migrant-influx\">What\u2019s causing the migrant influx?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There also are large divides by religion on views of <em>why <\/em>migrants are seeking to enter the U.S. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the one hand, a majority of U.S. adults, and majorities of all the religious groups analyzed here, say that economic factors \u2013 whether poor conditions in migrants\u2019 home countries or better economic opportunities in the U.S. \u2013 are a major factor behind the influx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-640-wide is-resized\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-8294\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2024\/03\/04\/us-christians-more-likely-than-nones-to-say-situation-at-the-border-is-a-crisis\/sr_24-03-04_religion-immigration_2-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c1dee7\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/03\/SR_24.03.04_religion-immigration_2.png?resize=480,405 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/03\/SR_24.03.04_religion-immigration_2.png?resize=782,660 782w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/03\/SR_24.03.04_religion-immigration_2.png?resize=960,810 960w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/03\/SR_24.03.04_religion-immigration_2.png?resize=1200,1013 1200w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/03\/SR_24.03.04_religion-immigration_2.png?resize=1280,1080 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"540\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/03\/SR_24.03.04_religion-immigration_2.png?w=640\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that U.S. 'nones' more likely than Christians to say violence back home is a major reason for migrant influx at the southern border.\" class=\"wp-image-8294 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c1dee7; width:640px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, White evangelical Protestants are <em>less <\/em>likely than other religious groups to say that escaping violence in their home countries is a major reason why migrants come to the U.S. And they are <em>more <\/em>likely than most other groups to say that migrants come because they believe that U.S. immigration policies will make it easy for them to stay once they arrive.<br><br>Among White evangelical Protestants, half say violence in migrants\u2019 home countries is a major reason behind the influx, compared with larger shares of White Catholics (57%), White nonevangelical Protestants (64%), Hispanic Catholics (68%) and Black Protestants (72%) who say the same. Roughly three quarters of the religiously unaffiliated, including 86% of atheists, take this position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the flip side, 74% of White evangelicals say a significant factor behind the influx is the belief that U.S. immigration policies will make it easy to stay, as do 69% of White Catholics, 66% of White nonevangelical Protestants and 62% of Hispanic Catholics. Fewer Black Protestants (52%) and religiously unaffiliated Americans (44%) say this is a major factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-the-migrant-influx-leading-to-more-crime\">Is the migrant influx leading to more crime?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There has long been debate over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/15\/us\/border-migrants-crime-cec\/index.html\">whether migration leads to more crime<\/a>. Studies have often shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w31440\">immigration is not associated with higher crime rates<\/a>, but views are polarized along partisan lines.<br><br>In our recent survey, we asked Americans whether the large number of migrants seeking to enter at the border with Mexico is leading to more crime in the U.S., less crime, or not having much of an impact on crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White evangelical Protestants are more likely than those in other religious groups to say the situation at the border is leading to more crime in the country. Smaller but still substantial majorities of White Catholics (70%) and White nonevangelical Protestants (69%) say the same.<br><br>By contrast, among religiously unaffiliated adults, 58% say the situation at the border is either having little impact on crime or leading to less crime. White Christians \u2013 especially White evangelical Protestants, but also White Catholics and White nonevangelical Protestants \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2023\/07\/12\/voting-patterns-in-the-2022-elections\/#Religion-and-the-2022-election\">mostly vote for Republican candidates<\/a>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/politics\/2024\/02\/15\/how-americans-view-the-situation-at-the-u-s-mexico-border-its-causes-and-consequences\/pp_2024-2-15_us-mexico-border_0-2\/\">far more Republicans than Democrats<\/a> view the situation as a crisis and say the migrant surge leads to increased crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By contrast, Black Protestants, Hispanic Catholics and religious \u201cnones\u201d mostly vote Democratic. And Democrats are far less likely than Republicans to view the situation as a crisis or say the migrant surge is driving up crime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Majorities of
