Just 33% take the view that \u201cmany of the country\u2019s problems could be dealt with more effectively if Trump didn\u2019t have to worry so much about Congress or the courts.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even more Americans \u2013 78% \u2013 express concerns about expanding presidential power when asked about U.S. presidents in general.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-plus-icon has-border-color has-ui-gray-light-border-color has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-background has-sans-serif-font-family is-layout-flow wp-container-core-details-is-layout-61b01db2 wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(0.875em, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 0.2em) * 0.009), 0.88em);\"><summary>How we did this<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand how the public views the prospect of expanded presidential power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this analysis, we surveyed 5,086 adults from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, 2025. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. This compares with about half of both Republicans who less strongly identify with the party (46%) and independents who lean Republican (47%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: This survey was conducted from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, before some of the Trump administration\u2019s <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/02\/12\/trump-doge-executive-order-musk-federal-staff-cuts\"><em>most recent executive actions aimed at reducing the size of the federal workforce<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"would-it-be-too-risky-to-expand-the-powers-of-the-presidency-in-general\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Would it be \u2018too risky\u2019 to expand the powers of the presidency in general?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, majorities of both Republicans and Democrats are skeptical about giving U.S. presidents more power. This is similar to the shares who said this throughout much of Trump\u2019s first term. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Democrats\u2019 views have moved in the opposite direction. <\/strong>Today, 89% say it\u2019s too risky to give presidents more power. That is on par with Democrats\u2019 views during Trump\u2019s first term, but up 17 percentage points from last year (during Biden\u2019s presidency).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: This is an update of a post originally published on Feb. 28, 2024.
