And audiences are shrinking for several older types of news media \u2013 such as local TV stations, most newspapers and public radio \u2013 even as they grow for newer platforms like podcasts, as well as for a few specific media brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center has long tracked trends in the news industry. The fact sheets use a range of methodologies to study the health of the U.S. news industry, including analysis of industry data and direct reporting to solicit information unavailable elsewhere. All sources are cited in chart and graphic notes or within the text of the fact sheets. <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2023\/11\/10\/state-of-the-news-media-methodology\/\">Read the methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts, its primary funder. This is the latest report in Pew Research Center\u2019s ongoing investigation of the state of news, information and journalism in the digital age, a research program funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, with generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest data shows a complex picture. As of 2022, estimated Sunday and weekday circulation had each fallen to just under 21 million.\" class=\"wp-image-8891 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f2f2f1; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For the most part, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/newspapers\/\"><strong>daily newspaper circulation<\/strong><\/a><strong> nationwide \u2013 counting digital subscriptions and print circulation \u2013 continues to decline, falling to just under 21 million in 2022,<\/strong> according to projections using data from the Alliance for Audited Media (AAM). Weekday circulation is down 8% from the previous year and 32% from five years prior, when it was over 30 million. Out of 136 papers included in this analysis, 120 experienced declines in weekday circulation in 2022.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>While most newspapers in the United States are struggling, some of the biggest brands are experiencing digital growth.<\/strong> AAM data <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/decoded\/2021\/06\/29\/estimating-u-s-newspaper-circulation-is-a-challenge-especially-for-2020\/\">does not include all digital circulation to three of the nation\u2019s most prominent newspapers<\/a>: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. But while all three are experiencing declines in their print subscriptions, other available data suggests substantial increases in digital subscriptions for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. (Similar data is not available for The Washington Post.) For example, The New York Times saw a 32% increase in digital-only subscriptions in 2022, surpassing 10 million subscribers and continuing years of growth, according to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). There are many reasons this data is not directly comparable with the AAM data, including the fact that some digital subscriptions to The New York Times do not include news and are limited to other products like cooking and games. Still, these brands are bucking the overall trend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Overall, digital traffic to newspapers\u2019 websites is declining.<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/newspapers\/\">average monthly number of unique visitors<\/a> to the websites of the country\u2019s top 50 newspapers (based on circulation, and including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post) declined 20% to under 9 million in the fourth quarter of 2022, down from over 11 million in the same period in 2021, according to Comscore data. The length of the average visit to these sites is also falling \u2013 to just under a minute and a half in the last quarter of 2022.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Traffic to top digital news websites is not picking up the slack.<\/strong> Overall, traffic to the most visited news websites \u2013 those with at least 10 million unique visitors per month in the fourth quarter of a given year \u2013 has declined over the past two years. The <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/digital-news\/\">average number of monthly unique visitors<\/a> to these sites was 3% lower in October-December 2022 than in the same period in 2021, following a 13% drop the year before that, according to Comscore. The length of the average visit to these sites is getting shorter, too. (These sites can include newspapers\u2019 websites, such as that of The New York Times, as well as other digital news sites like those of CNN, Fox News or Axios.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-640-wide is-resized\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-8895\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/11\/28\/audiences-are-declining-for-traditional-news-media-in-the-us-with-some-exceptions\/sr_23-11-28_sotnm_2-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f1f0f0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/11\/SR_23.11.28_SOTNM_2.png?resize=480,656 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/11\/SR_23.11.28_SOTNM_2.png?resize=782,1069 782w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/11\/SR_23.11.28_SOTNM_2.png?resize=840,1148 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"875\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/11\/SR_23.11.28_SOTNM_2.png?w=640\" alt=\"Line chart showing declines in audiences for local TV news across morning, evening and late night time slots from 2016 to 2022 for ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates.\" class=\"wp-image-8895 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f1f0f0; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Across several years of data, there has been a drop in audiences for <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/local-tv-news\/\"><strong>local TV news<\/strong><\/a><strong>, affecting morning, evening and late-night time slots alike.<\/strong> For example, the average number of TVs tuning into ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates for the evening news was just over 3 million in 2022, down from just over 4 million in 2016.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Audience trends are a little more mixed when it comes to TV news on cable and network stations.<\/strong> Prime-time and daytime audiences for <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/cable-news\/\">CNN, Fox News and MSNBC<\/a> all grew in 2020, the first year of the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/topic\/coronavirus-disease-covid-19\/\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, before declining in 2021. <strong>Fox News\u2019 audiences ticked back up in 2022<\/strong>, while the audiences for the other two channels continued to decline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Audiences for news programming on <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/network-news\/\"><strong>ABC, CBS and NBC<\/strong><\/a><strong> have been relatively stable in recent years,<\/strong> with some variation depending on the time slot. Audiences for evening news are up slightly since 2016 on all three networks, but they are modestly down for morning news.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The story is mixed when it comes to audio, too.<\/strong> The share of Americans who listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/audio-and-podcasting\/\">terrestrial radio<\/a> has declined in recent years, as has listenership on <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/public-broadcasting\/\">NPR and PRX<\/a>. But there has been a <strong>clear rise in audiences for <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/audio-and-podcasting\/\"><strong>podcasts and other types of online audio<\/strong><\/a>. Although podcasts often are not news-related, about two-thirds of <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/2023\/04\/18\/podcasts-as-a-source-of-news-and-information\/\">U.S. podcast listeners<\/a> say they hear news discussed on the podcasts they listen to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"economic-trends-in-the-news-industry\">Economic trends in the news industry<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Declines in audience don\u2019t necessarily mean declines in revenue, with some industries faring better than others in 2022. As of 2022, estimated circulation revenue exceeds advertising revenue, $11.6 billion to $9.8 billion.\" class=\"wp-image-8898 not-transparent\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f4f3f2; width:420px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Advertising <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/newspapers\/#economics\"><strong>revenue for newspapers<\/strong><\/a><strong> has continued to decline steadily.<\/strong> In 2020, projections of circulation revenue surpassed advertising revenue for the first time since at least 1956 (the first year for which data is available), and that pattern has held steady in recent years. The makeup of advertising revenue is changing as well: Nearly half of newspaper companies\u2019 advertising revenue (48%) came from digital advertising in 2022, up from 19% in 2012.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/local-tv-news\/#economics\"><strong>local television<\/strong><\/a><strong>, advertising revenue has remained roughly stable on the whole,<\/strong> bolstered by increased digital advertising and consistent spikes in political advertising revenue during election years. Political advertising, in particular, has grown over the past decade, increasing from roughly $600 million in the 2012 presidential election year to about $1.9 billion in 2022 (a midterm election year). Local TV stations also have seen increasing revenue from retransmission fees, paid by cable and satellite systems to carry local channels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Local <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/journalism\/fact-sheet\/public-broadcasting\/#economics\"><strong>public radio station revenue<\/strong><\/a><strong> has increased,<\/strong> from roughly $1.1 billion in 2020 to about $1.2 billion in 2021.
