This study sought to understand how people think about each of these things \u2013 and what, if anything, they do to manage their privacy online. (<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2023\/10\/18\/how-americans-view-data-privacy\/\">Read the full report<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This survey was conducted among 5,101 U.S. adults from May 15 to 21, 2023. Everyone who took part in the survey is a member of the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race and ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/our-methods\/u-s-surveys\/the-american-trends-panel\/\">ATP\u2019s methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are&nbsp;the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/10\/PI_2023.10.18_Data-Privacy_TOPLINE.pdf\">questions used&nbsp;for this analysis<\/a>, along with responses, and&nbsp;its <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2023\/10\/18\/data-privacy-methodology-2\/\">methodology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are nine takeaways from a new <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2023\/10\/18\/how-americans-view-data-privacy\/\">Pew Research Center report<\/a> exploring these issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Americans, especially Republicans, are growing more concerned about how the government uses the data it collects about them. <\/strong>About seven-in-ten U.S. adults (71%) say they are very or somewhat concerned about this, up from 64% in 2019. About six-in-ten Americans (61%) think they\u2019re ineffective at explaining how companies use people\u2019s data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-big-number wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About seven-in-ten Americans are overwhelmed by the number of passwords they have to remember. <\/strong>And nearly half (45%) report feeling anxious about whether their passwords are strong and secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these concerns, only half of adults say they typically choose passwords that are more secure, even if they are harder to remember. Still, roughly six-in-ten say the same about technology companies, and just under half believe the government should have a great deal of responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: Here are&nbsp;the <a
