That share is slightly higher than the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/04\/29\/key-facts-about-asian-americans\/\">7% of the U.S. population that is Asian American<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"border-width:1px;padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);--block-gap: inherit\" class=\"wp-block-prc-block-collapsible has-background has-ui-beige-very-light-background-color has-border-color has-ui-beige-dark-border-color\" id=\"how-we-did-this\" data-wp-interactive=\"{&quot;namespace&quot;:&quot;prc-block\\\/collapsible&quot;}\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;collapsibleId&quot;:&quot;how-we-did-this&quot;,&quot;isOpen&quot;:false}\" data-wp-class--is-open=\"context.isOpen\" data-wp-init--scroll-into-view=\"callbacks.onInitScrollIntoView\"><div class=\"wp-block-prc-block-collapsible__title\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.onClick\"><div>How we did this<\/div><button class=\"wp-block-prc-block-collapsible__icon\"><span data-wp-bind--hidden=\"context.isOpen\"><i class=\"icon icon-library__light icon__circle-plus\"><svg style=\"width: 1em; height: 1em;\"><use xlink:href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/plugins\/prc-icon-library\/build\/icons\/sprites\/light.svg#circle-plus\"><\/use><\/svg><\/i><\/span><span data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!context.isOpen\" hidden><i class=\"icon icon-library__light icon__circle-minus\"><svg style=\"width: 1em; height: 1em;\"><use xlink:href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/plugins\/prc-icon-library\/build\/icons\/sprites\/light.svg#circle-minus\"><\/use><\/svg><\/i><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-prc-block-collapsible__content\">\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to examine the geographic distribution of Asian restaurants throughout the United States and to highlight patterns of cuisines offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Center purchased point-of-interest data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safegraph.com\/\">SafeGraph<\/a>, a data company that curates high-precision data on millions of places around the globe, representing all known restaurants in the U.S. Restaurants were defined using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) category for \u201cRestaurants and Other Eating Places\u201d (NAICS code 7225). When data was collected on March 23, 2023, SafeGraph included records for 787,153 open restaurants across the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then used SafeGraph\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.safegraph.com\/docs\/places-rich-attributes#category_tags\">category tags<\/a> to identify Asian restaurants and the type(s) of food they serve. Throughout this post, we use phrases such as \u201cChinese restaurants,\u201d \u201cChinese cuisine\u201d and \u201crestaurants that serve Chinese food\u201d interchangeably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These tags include categories for food from 10 different origin groups: Chinese, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Japanese, Burmese, Pakistani, Mongolian and Thai. In addition to these groups based on specific types of Asian food, the category tags also include a general \u201cAsian food\u201d category. This is a broad catch-all classification that is used with restaurants that have insufficient information to place in a more specific category. Our own review of this tag found that that it may also include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Restaurants serving the food of smaller origin groups or groups for which SafeGraph lacks a more detailed category listing. These include Bhutanese, Taiwanese, Indonesian or Laotian restaurants, among others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>General \u201cpan-Asian\u201d cuisine, either on its own or in conjunction with other types of food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three other category tags \u2013 \u201csushi<em>,\u201d<\/em> \u201cnoodles\u201dand \u201cbubble tea shop\u201d \u2013 do not explicitly reference an Asian origin group but are commonly related to Asian cuisine<em>.<\/em> Restaurants with the \u201csushi\u201d tag are included in the \u201cJapanese food\u201d category. Restaurants with the \u201cnoodles\u201d or \u201cbubble tea shop\u201d tags are included in the \u201cOther Asian\/Unspecified\u201d category unless the restaurant is already tagged with a more specific category. Any restaurants tagged as \u201cItalian food\u201d or \u201cpizza along with noodles\u201d are not counted as Asian restaurants. These instances generally refer to the pasta noodle typical of Italian cuisine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individual restaurants can be included in multiple categories. For instance, a restaurant may include tags for \u201cJapanese food\u201d and \u201cThai food,\u201d or for \u201cChinese food\u201d and \u201cAsian food.\u201d These restaurants are counted under all categories listed. Because of this, the totals reported may exceed 100%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asian origin group population estimates are taken from table <a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/table?q=B02015:+ASIAN+ALONE+BY+SELECTED+GROUPS&amp;tid=ACSDT5Y2019.B02015\">B02015 of the American Community Survey\u2019s 5-year 2019 estimates<\/a>, which include counties and county equivalents (such as Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, for example).<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-9744\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/05\/23\/71-of-asian-restaurants-in-the-u-s-serve-chinese-japanese-or-thai-food\/sr_2023-05-23_restaurant_1-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ebebe9\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ebebe9;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/05\/sr_2023.05.23_restaurant_1.png?resize=480,697 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/05\/sr_2023.05.23_restaurant_1.png?resize=620,900 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"450\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/05\/sr_2023.05.23_restaurant_1.png?w=310\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that 71% of Asian restaurants in the U.S. serve Chinese, Japanese or Thai food.\" class=\"wp-image-9744 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around seven-in-ten of all Asian restaurants in the U.S. serve the food of just three Asian origin groups: Chinese, Japanese and Thai. These groups together comprise <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/04\/29\/key-facts-about-asian-origin-groups-in-the-u-s\/\">33% of the U.S. Asian population.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some other key takeaways from the analysis, which is based on data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safegraph.com\/\">SafeGraph<\/a>, a data company that curates high-precision data on millions of places around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chinese establishments are by far the most common type of Asian restaurant in the U.S.<\/strong> Nearly four-in-ten Asian restaurants (39%) serve <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4211871\/chinese-food-history\/\">Chinese food, which has a long history in the U.S.<\/a> By comparison, Chinese Americans account for about a quarter of Asians living in the U.S. (24%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Japanese and Thai food has spread widely, despite these groups\u2019 relatively small shares of the U.S. population. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/guide.michelin.com\/us\/en\/article\/features\/sushi-history-america-los-angeles\">The first sushi restaurant in the U.S.<\/a> opened just over 50 years ago, but today sushi is widely available from coast to coast. Restaurants that serve Japanese food account for 28% of Asian restaurants in the U.S., making it the second-most common Asian cuisine. Japanese Americans, by comparison, are the sixth-largest Asian origin group in the country, comprising 7% of the U.S. Asian population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, Thai establishments make up 11% of all Asian restaurants \u2013 the third-most common cuisine behind Chinese and Japanese food \u2013 while just 2% of Asian Americans are Thai. The Thai government has historically supported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/asia\/2002\/02\/21\/thailands-gastro-diplomacy\">efforts to increase the number of Thai restaurants<\/a> around the world as a form of diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indian and Filipino establishments account for a relatively small share of Asian restaurants. <\/strong>Indian and Filipino restaurants account for 7% and 1% of all Asian restaurants in the U.S., respectively \u2013 even though Indian and Filipino Americans account for nearly 40% of Asians in the U.S. combined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Like the Asian American population, Asian restaurants in the U.S. are heavily concentrated in a few states.<\/strong> More than half of U.S. Asians (55%) <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2021\/04\/29\/key-facts-about-asian-americans\/\">live in five states<\/a>: California, New York, Texas, New Jersey and Washington. And just under half of all Asian restaurants \u2013 45% \u2013 are located in those five states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 15% of all restaurants in Hawaii, California, Washington, Nevada and New York serve Asian food, and each state has a significant Asian American population. Meanwhile, Asian restaurants account for 6% of all restaurants in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and West Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Around three-quarters of all counties in the U.S. (73%) have at least one Asian restaurant of any kind.<\/strong> And in eight counties with at least 15 restaurants of any type, Asian restaurants make up at least a quarter of all food establishments. Half of those counties are in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-640-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-9750\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2023\/05\/23\/71-of-asian-restaurants-in-the-u-s-serve-chinese-japanese-or-thai-food\/sr_2023-05-23_restaurant_2-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eff0e8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eff0e8;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/05\/sr_2023.05.23_restaurant_2.png?resize=480,360 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/05\/sr_2023.05.23_restaurant_2.png?resize=782,587 782w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/05\/sr_2023.05.23_restaurant_2.png?resize=960,720 960w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/05\/sr_2023.05.23_restaurant_2.png?resize=1200,900 1200w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/05\/sr_2023.05.23_restaurant_2.png?resize=1280,960 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"480\" width=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/05\/sr_2023.05.23_restaurant_2.png?w=640\" alt=\"A map of the U.S. that shows in eight counties, at least one-in-four restaurants serve Asian food.\" class=\"wp-image-9750 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chinese restaurants are found in every state and in 70% of all U.S. counties.<\/strong> Every state and a third or more of all counties also have at least one Japanese (45%) or Thai (33%) restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, restaurants serving other types of Asian food are less widely distributed.
