(Attila Kisbenedek\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The governments of Poland and Hungary \u2013 both controlled by <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/10\/06\/populists-in-europe-especially-those-on-the-right-have-increased-their-vote-shares-in-recent-elections\/\">right-wing populist parties<\/a> \u2013 have clashed with the European Union over myriad issues in recent months, including <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/budapest-media-radio-courts-hungary-11df6387eacd239af3f2777b95bba9c9\">the independence of their media<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/kaczynski-accuse-eu-trying-break-poland-pis-leyen-democracy-pandemic-coronavirus\/\">judiciaries<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/hungary-cannot-support-any-new-eu-energy-sanctions-against-russia-govt-2022-09-29\/\">sanctions against Russia<\/a>. Most in Poland also feel the EU respects their country\u2019s values, understands the needs of Polish citizens and treats Poland fairly, though considerably fewer in Hungary say the EU does the same for their country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In both countries, sizable shares of the public see the EU in a negative light on one measure: 44% of Poles and 42% of Hungarians see the EU as intrusive. Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Hungary-and-Poland-EU-topline.pdf\">the questions used<\/a> for this analysis, along with responses. Visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/methods\/interactives\/international-methodology\/all-survey\/all-country\/all-year\/\">methodology page<\/a> for more information about the survey methods used outside the United States.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evaluations of the EU vary widely between supporters and nonsupporters of the right-wing populist parties in power in each country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Poland, supporters of the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) are far less likely than nonsupporters to say the EU respects Poland\u2019s values (47% vs. 84%), understands the needs of Poland\u2019s citizens (49% vs. 82%) and treats Poland fairly (38% vs. 79%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Hungary, the pattern is similar. Poland, which ranks lowest in LGBTQ+ rights among 27 EU member states according to <a href=\"https:\/\/rainbow-europe.org\/country-ranking#eu\">Rainbow Europe<\/a>, has had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/eu-warns-polish-regions-they-could-lose-funding-over-lgbt-free-zones-2021-09-06\/\">funding withheld<\/a> over the self-imposed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/stories-54191344\">LGBT free<\/a>\u201d status of roughly 100 municipalities and regions in the country (Polish courts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/polish-court-rules-that-four-lgbt-free-zones-must-be-abolished-2022-06-28\/\">have since ruled<\/a> that these \u201czones\u201d must be abolished in four municipalities, and three regional councils have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/two-polish-regions-repeal-lgbt-free-declarations-2021-09-27\/\">repealed the declarations<\/a> in order to maintain their funding). Separately, the EU is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hungary-gender-identity-gay-rights-5a18372fabda636154783d5fd3557608\">suing Hungary<\/a> over a restrictive law that bans depictions of homosexuality or sex reassignment in media targeting young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these political clashes, more Poles and Hungarians say homosexuality should be accepted by society than say it should not be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-11914\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/10\/18\/despite-recent-political-clashes-most-people-in-poland-and-hungary-see-the-eu-favorably\/ft_2022-10-18_hungarypoland_03-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d0d5cd\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d0d5cd;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/10\/ft_2022.10.18_hungarypoland_03.png?resize=480,571 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/10\/ft_2022.10.18_hungarypoland_03.png?resize=620,738 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"369\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/10\/ft_2022.10.18_hungarypoland_03.png?w=310\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that half or more in Poland and Hungary say homosexuality should be accepted\" class=\"wp-image-11914 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, the 53% of Poles and 52% of Hungarians who say homosexuality should be accepted by society are the highest shares recorded in each country since Pew Research Center began asking (in 2002 in Poland and 2019 in Hungary). This year also marks the first time that significantly more Poles have expressed the view that homosexuality should be accepted than should not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like views of the EU, support for <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/global\/2020\/06\/25\/global-divide-on-homosexuality-persists\/\">the acceptance of homosexuality<\/a> is and has been a partisan issue in Poland and Hungary. In both countries, roughly two-thirds of those who <em>oppose<\/em> the governing right-wing populist party say homosexuality should be accepted (68% in Poland and 67% in Hungary).
