Among U.S. adults who have used a dating site or app in the past year, about half (47%) say it has been at least somewhat important to them that the profiles they look at include someone\u2019s COVID-19 vaccination status, according to a July Pew Research Center survey. These Americans are the focus of this analysis and are also referred to as \u201ccurrent or recent online dating users\u201d throughout this post. This survey was conducted among 6,034 U.S. adults from July 5-17, 2022. This included 4,996 respondents from the Center\u2019s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. It also included an oversample of 1,038 respondents from Ipsos\u2019 KnowledgePanel who indicated that they are lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB), with oversampled groups weighted back to reflect proportions in the population. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Current or recent online dating users who are Democrats or lean toward the Democratic Party are far more likely than their Republican and GOP-leaning counterparts to say someone\u2019s vaccination status is important for them to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This mirrors partisan patterns in related Center research. Democrats are also more likely than Republicans to be <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/science\/2022\/07\/07\/americans-reflect-on-nations-covid-19-response\/#vaccination-rates-personal-experiences-with-covid-19-and-testing\">fully vaccinated against COVID-19<\/a> and to have received a booster. And <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/04\/06\/most-americans-who-are-single-and-looking-say-dating-has-been-harder-during-the-pandemic\/\">among daters generally<\/a> \u2013 not just those using dating sites or apps \u2013 Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say they would only go out with someone who is vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Political affiliation itself is another piece of information that some online dating users consider important as they browse people\u2019s profiles, according to the new survey. About half of those who have used dating sites or apps over the past year (53%) say seeing political affiliation on profiles has been at least somewhat important to them, including 18% who say it has been very important. Another 47% say it\u2019s been not too or not at all important to them. Views on this question also differ by party among these online dating users, with Democrats somewhat more likely than Republicans to say it\u2019s important to see someone\u2019s political affiliation on an online dating profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The perceived importance of seeing political affiliation in dating profiles has risen among recent online dating users since the last time the Center <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2020\/02\/06\/users-of-online-dating-platforms-experience-both-positive-and-negative-aspects-of-courtship-on-the-web\/\">asked this question<\/a> in 2019. The share who say seeing this information is important has risen from 40% of those who were current or recent online dating users in 2019 to 53% of current or recent online dating users today. This largely reflects a 16 percentage point rise among those who are Democrats or Democratic leaners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The profile \u201csignals\u201d that online daters look for reflect changing societal circumstances \u2013 such as the emergence of the pandemic \u2013 but also new features from the companies that run dating sites and apps. For example, as COVID-19 vaccines were rolled out, companies noticed mentions of vaccination status <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/shot-love-your-vaccination-status-latest-covid-era-compatibility-test-n1266618\">increasing<\/a> in user profiles and some apps debuted profile \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-coronavirus-pandemic-technology-health-lifestyle-39e59dc1f6e475fa98a27b115c05b48d\">badges<\/a>\u201d so users could quickly determine whether a potential match\u2019s vaccination status was in sync with their own. Still, online daters have long scanned dating profiles to quickly evaluate a <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/internet\/2020\/02\/06\/users-of-online-dating-platforms-experience-both-positive-and-negative-aspects-of-courtship-on-the-web\/\">variety of characteristics<\/a> that might be important to them \u2013 anything from physical attraction to religious beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"twenty-eight-of-americans-who-ve-used-dating-sites-apps-in-past-year-have-gone-on-virtual-first-date-with-another-user-during-that-time\">28% of Americans who\u2019ve used dating sites, apps in past year have gone on virtual first date with another user during that time<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-310-wide\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-12495\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/short-reads\/2022\/09\/27\/about-half-of-recent-online-daters-in-u-s-say-its-important-to-see-covid-19-vaccination-status-on-profiles\/ft_2022-09-27_onlinedating_03a-png\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ecedee\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ecedee;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/09\/ft_2022.09.27_onlinedating_03a.png?resize=480,753 480w, https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/09\/ft_2022.09.27_onlinedating_03a.png?resize=620,972 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 480px, (max-width: 782px) 782px, 640px\" height=\"486\" width=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/beta.pewresearch.org\/pewresearch-org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2022\/09\/ft_2022.09.27_onlinedating_03a.png?w=310\" alt=\"A bar chart showing that few users of dating sites and apps in the past year say COVID-19 concerns led them to virtual first dates in that time frame\" class=\"wp-image-12495 not-transparent\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond exploring what is important to users when perusing profiles, the survey also found that 28% of current or recent online dating users have gone on a first date by phone or video call over the past year with someone they met on a dating site or app. However, only a small share of all Americans who have used a dating site or app in the past year (8%) say that they have been on a virtual date during that time frame specifically due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another one-in-five say they went on at least one virtual first date with someone from dating sites or apps in the past year, but report that concern about the coronavirus wasn\u2019t a reason they opted to meet virtually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Connecting via phone or otherwise before meeting in person is not a new idea. But it gained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20200717-is-video-dating-here-to-stay\">renewed attention<\/a> as the pandemic took hold, with some dating platforms debuting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/5\/5\/21248548\/tinder-video-chat-launch-update\">in-app video calls<\/a> to help users find ways to keep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/video-dept\/the-awkward-surprising-realness-of-virtual-first-dates\">their dating lives alive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Video dates have drawn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/08\/fashion\/weddings\/sparks-fly-on-virtual-dates-but-not-so-much-in-real-life.html\">mixed reviews<\/a> from users. Still, some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/28\/the-future-of-dating-apps-match-bumble-is-much-more-social.html\">companies that run dating platforms<\/a> are betting on the format
